Sarah Michelle Gellar Stakes BUFFY, UPN Unsure About Future of Tuesday Series

PROMENADE

Typhon Station is a very fastpaced PBeM RPG with skilled, experienced players and a warm sense of bonding and community. We play at the turn-of-the-century, 2400, and are located in the Typhon Expanses, bordering the Neutral Zone, proximate to the Romulan Empire, and near the Iconian Digs, and are on the first warning route of the original Borg Incursion.
We have three stations to post from, SB 185, USS Odyssey, and USS Wraith. They all have general and particular storylines and all interact. This game is not for the faint of heart! The writing is superb and comes hot and heavy. We have some open spots and also we will consider character suggestions. So, longtime RPGers and novices, check us out. See if you want to make Typhon Station your home away from home.

TV Guide Online reports today that BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER star Sarah Michelle Gellar will not return for a possible eighth season of the popular UPN series. The mag cites unnamed sources who say the news is confirmed. Gellar's involvement in the feature film ROMANTIC COMEDY this August puts the final nail in the speculative coffin, which has been spinning for months with reports of Gellar's departure after this, the show's seventh season.

UPN acquired BUFFY in a fierce bidding war with rival WB after its fifth season and has used the popular vehicle to anchor its Tuesday night line-up. But recent ratings downturns have made the show's future with the network dubious, since CBS chief Mel Karmazin took over operations of UPN and is rumored to be interested ONLY in bona fide "ratings winners" (story).

Although talk has swirled of continuing the series without Gellar or even starting a spin-off with alternate slayer Eliza Dushku ('Faith'), the latter seems unlikely considering Dushku's recent deal to star in a Fox pilot and the former may not be what UPN's looking for. The current season finale of BUFFY will bring back ANGEL star David Boreanez, whose character was spun-off from the Gellar show.

Yes, its a Star Trek site... but B&B could learn from Buffy

Why was "Buffy" such a strong series and why is it relevant on a Trek site?

Because it's got what every Trek since "DS9" didn't have... CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT!!!!!!!

There was no stunt casting on Buffy... Willow didnt go lesbian one week then the very next week it was as if it never happened. Faith showed up in season three and showed lots of cleavage, just like 7 of 9... but Faith's character was about rampant sexuality and being a polar opposite of Buffy, not just putting T&A up there to get teenage boys watching.

The storylines ran for a whole season. This was Ds9's strongest suit. This is something seriously lacking from the 2 most recent Treks... where was the overall continuity of Voyager? When did the Maquis start loving their Starfleet co-workers (CAPTORS)? Why was the Borg weaponry removed from the hull of Voyager after "Scorpion II"? Because B&B were afraid to alter the canvas they were trying to paint on.

When Buffy spun off Angel, there were no Angel episodes that were copies or rip-offs of Buffy episodes, whereas most of "Enterprise" has been rehashes of old Trek plots... Trip and the ugly alien guy who couldn't talk English? Remember TNG's "The Enemy" (hell, remember the film "Enemy Mine")?

Rickie-poo... Brannon-cakes... we have some lessons to learn from Lord Joss Whedon... yes, his show has sucked from time to time. And what'd he do? He kicked some ass, cleared the field, and started on a new track. Now Bore-man and Braggart have promised they're going to do this. Sadly, it's too late. I stopped watching Enterprise after the aforementioned "Enemy Mine" rip-off... because I get done and wish I had my hour back.

So, not to be a jerk or anything, but the posting of that Buffy story has a hell of a lot to do with Trek... because it's an example of a genre program that has actually gone quite mainstream, become sickeningly popular but remained true to its mission statement... because the writers/producers have put THOUGHT into the stories... they've put some CHARACTER into the people we see every week... because they've been honest to the characters and to the audience (well, as honest as you can get when you're doing a show about a 22-year-old girl who kills vampires)

That's my opinion, I welcome yours.

Gul Telly

PS - Just watched DS9 season 1 on DVD... GREAT GOOBALLY MOOBALY I miss that damn show!

Seven years is a good run

Unlike Enterprise or Voyager, Buffy has not not outstayed it's welcome.
Its been a great show, with well rounded charcters and great stories. Its mixed Drama, Comedy and Action, something a show has never done before.
It may not have had the breakout success that it deserved but it has garnered a loyal following over the years and I will miss it.

Seven years is a long time for a show and like TNG its starting to show its age in its 7th season.
I would much rather see it go out on top than like X-files or the Trek Franchcise is done just producing product and leaving a bad taste in most peoples mouths.
It still could go on with out SMG but it will just be a marketing decision as a way to make money much the same waye Paramount has done over and over again with the Trek Franchise.
Did we really need countless spinoffs.
If they had ended after TNG or even DS9 I think we would be better off.
Hopefully Whedon has learned from these mistakes.
