Last night's first-run presentation of ENTERPRISE's "Canamar" matched its immediate predecessor (
story) with a 4.5/7 in the overnight ratings, according to
Marc Berman's Programming Insider at
MediaWeek. This means that roughly 7% of American television-watching households were tuned in Wednesday to the last new ENTERPRISE episode until April. "Future Tense" went on to secure an audience of 4.62 million viewers and a final rating of 2.9, identical to both "Stigma" and "Cease Fire," after scoring a 4.5/7 overnight rating last week.
All four February Sweeps ENTERPRISE installments demonstrated a clear trend of stabilization for the struggling UPN series. "Stigma" drew 4.4 million viewers, followed by 4.78m for "Cease Fire" and 4.62m for "Future Tense," numbers far below the season high of "A Night In Sickbay" (6.26m) back in October, but up from "Dawn," which started 2003 with just 3.99 million viewers. "Canamar" is likely to hold its own among Sweeps 2003 counterparts, which, while on the lower end of the spectrum for the season, generated some of the most positive fan reactions in months. "Shockwave, II" kicked off season two with an overnight rating of 4.9/8 (story) in September, but the series declined after "A Night In Sickbay" (5.1/8, story). 4.5/7 remains the highest overnight performance for ENTERPRISE of 2003.
The news for UPN hasn't been very rosy this February, with audience and ratings down at least 20% on the year ago period, while the WB has posted gains of similar magnitude. ENTERPRISE lead-out THE TWILIGHT ZONE lost 36% of ENTERPRISE's audience (2.9/4), even after somewhat of a respite last week. UPN ended sixth overall last night, far behind rival WB with a nightly average of 3.7/5 vs. 4.8/7 in the overnight figures.
Berman calls ENTERPRISE "always-reliable" this week and the prequel series took the fifth place spot in the eight o'clock hour, behind the WB's THE LONE RANGER (4.8/7). The hour was dominated by CBS' STAR SEARCH (8.3/12) and Fox's AMERICAN IDOL (8.1/12), followed by ABC's comedy MY WIFE AND KIDS (7.8/12), Fox's THAT 70'S SHOW (7.8/12), and NBC's ED (7.2/11).
