BUFFY Won't Continue Without Gellar, UPN Eyes Spin-off But Whedon Not Quite Ready

PROMENADE

Typhon Station is a very fastpaced PBeM RPG with skilled, experienced players and a warm sense of bonding and community. We play at the turn-of-the-century, 2400, and are located in the Typhon Expanses, bordering the Neutral Zone, proximate to the Romulan Empire, and near the Iconian Digs, and are on the first warning route of the original Borg Incursion.
We have three stations to post from, SB 185, USS Odyssey, and USS Wraith. They all have general and particular storylines and all interact. This game is not for the faint of heart! The writing is superb and comes hot and heavy. We have some open spots and also we will consider character suggestions. So, longtime RPGers and novices, check us out. See if you want to make Typhon Station your home away from home.

On the heels of yesterday's news that actress Sarah Michelle Gellar would not return for an additional season of the popular UPN genre series BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER (story), today series creator and executive producer Joss Whedon says the show will not go on without her. Speculation had circulated that the show might continue sans the 25-year old Gellar, who's departing for a bigger film career.

Speaking to Variety, Whedon said, "We're shuffling off to Buffalo. Sarah's decision was wrapped up in mine. We weren't interested in doing it without the other."

UPN bought BUFFY for its last two years in 2001 after producer Fox and rival network WB couldn't agree on terms for its renewal. The STAR TREK network has anchored its Tuesday night line-up with BUFFY and is interested in a spin-off of the series. Whedon, however, isn't ready to jump into a follow-up just yet.

"I think ideally the best thing to do would be to wait and not rush anything," Whedon said. "There are paradigms that I've posited that could start next year ... (but) whatever came next, it would have to have at its center an idea as worthy as ('Buffy' and spinoff 'Angel') were. And somebody who's pretty."

Whedon says he hopes BUFFY has made an impact in presenting strong women that defy Hollywood stereotypes.

"[BUFFY was] part of the move toward genuinely strong female characters that weren't cardboard cutouts. The idea was to venerate people who weren't taken seriously and make a real strong feminist statement."

UPN's remaining genre tentpole next season will be ENTERPRISE. Read more at Reuters.

Thank God. It's about time that show ceased production. I hope TPTB replace the show with something good.

I think that allowing Angel to run on its own is a good idea for awhile. You don't want to turn the franchise into one that gets progressively weaker by being around too much, like the Star Trek universe has.

Here's a story: TV producer creates a landmark series. It ends. He tries a bunch of other series that fail. He goes back to the series that he succeeded with.

Gene Roddenberry, or Joss Whedon? Right now, it could be either.

Life After Buffy

These last two days come with the expected, sad news that first Sarah Michelle Gellar isn't returning to Buffy, Eliza Dushku (Faith) has signed to do a different series on FOX and now today the master of it all, Joss Whedon, nixing the idea of a spinoff. These events will make the hard core Buffy fans sad but the time between series will also make them miss what they love and will give the Buffy PTB time to reflect and create something worthy of our time.

My thoughts: Since SMG wants to do big screen movies then maybe a Buffy movie in 3 or 4 years would be the ticket. That would give Angel time to complete a 7 year run and make for a movie to die for :)

I have been a Star Trek fan since my childhood years in the 70's and 80's and, recently, have not been as attached to Trek in its current form because it doesn't really move me like Buffy and Angel do. I attribute that to the poor writing and B & B. I really like the actors (Scott Bakula is one of my favorites) but I want to feel the same for the crew of the Enterprise as I did for Picard's or Sisko's crews or as I feel for Buffy and the Scooby Gang or Angel and the Fang Gang.

Good Luck Sarah. You are an awesome performer and will do great in any role you accept.

Losing a great show like Buffy or enterprise being the tentpole for the network.
UPN, you are in trouble!
