Dept: Star Trek: Nemesis
Paramount Home Entertainment will release the most recent STAR TREK feature film, NEMESIS, later this year on May 20th. One of the most intriguing aspects of this release will be the inclusion of several deleted scenes from the film in a gallery. Sources tell TrekWeb that the seven excised clips will be introduced by NEMESIS producer Rick Berman, with two more prefaced by director Stuart Baird and at least one by Patrick Stewart.

Although reports of the running time of the scenes vary slightly between 15 and 20 minutes, one source suggests that we can expect to see several key moments including: Picard and Data sipping Chateau Picard on the Enterprise after the wedding and contemplating what it means to grow older; Tom Hardy's 'Shinzon' speaking to the Romulan Senate and unveiling his plans to conquer the Federation; conversation between Picard and Worf regarding defense preparations, perhaps glimpsed in the movie's theatrical trailers when Worf advises "extreme caution"; Picard and Troi in the corridor outside Sickbay after revealing the truth about Shinzon's connection to the captain; the additional telepathic assault on Counselor Troi in a turbolift, seen in the film's trailers; words between Picard and Dr. Crusher about the crisis of identity that Shinzon represents; and some epilogical scenes featuring Steven Culp as Picard's new first officer 'Commander Madden' and the installation of a seat belt to Picard's bridge chair.

None of this has been officially confirmed by Paramount Home Entertainment and many fans are familiar with these moments from interviews and coverage of the film. Not all scenes may have made it onto the DVD, unfortunately, including a touching scene where Worf and Geordi visit Data's quarters and decide who will take care of Data's cat, Spot. Other scenes that may never see the light of day include Data instructing B-4 on basic motor skills in the new Enterprise-E crew lounge set, or a discussion between Shinzon's Romulan conspirator in the Senate just before the villain appears to announce his plans. Undoubtedly there are also hordes of rougher footage, as Berman himself claimed that the film's first cut totaled nearly three hours (it was eventually edited down to 1:56).

Additionally, the NEMESIS DVD will contain four special bonus featurettes and sources provided the following information on their length and content.

  • NEW FRONTIERS: STUART BAIRD ON DIRECTING NEMESIS -- 9 minutes -- Baird focuses on the antagonism between Picard and his clone.
  • A STAR TREK FAMILY'S FINAL JOURNEY -- 17 minutes -- Screenwriter John Logan reportedly talks on his intent to incorporate themes of family and identity into the film.
  • RED ALERT! SHOOTING THE ACTION OF NEMESIS -- 11 minutes -- special focus on production of the film's extensive action and special effects sequences.
  • A BOLD VISION OF THE FINAL FRONTIER -- 11 minutes -- exploration of the set design and other atmospheric elements that helped made NEMESIS a visually different TNG movie.

The STAR TREK NEMESIS DVD warps into U.S. stores May 20th in both widescreen and full screen editions and also includes a feature-length commentary by director Stuart Baird. The Region 2 release is scheduled for August 4th in the UK. You can pre-order your copy from any of the below merchants and help support TrekWeb:

Don't forget to vote in TrekWeb's current opinion poll concerning the NEMESIS DVD: look for it on the front page or in the left-hand column of this story.

UPDATE 19:43: The official STAR TREK web site has now confirmed all of these deleted scenes and included detailed descriptions of each at this page.

Still missing stuff

I just read the updated info. Still no Wesley or extended wedding stuff, and nothing of Beverly explaining that she's leaving the Enterprise too. Include it all or don't bother. At least there are some directors out there like Kevin Smith who will throw in all the deleted stuff on DVD whether they really needed to be or not. Whomever is in charge of Paramount's video/DVD dept. needs to be fired, as from what I've heard and seen, Trek isn't the only Paramount product that gets shafted when it comes to DVD.

At the time, when there was no sign that such a DVD would be released, the board was full of complaints. Now, surprisingly such a DVD does come out, and the board is still full of complaints! I don't remember if these are the same people who complained in the first way. I'm willing to say it's not the same people. So, I just want to add, that all the rest of us are pleasantly surprised that they release this DVD.

About the LOTR comparison...

If Paramount announces 6 months or a year down the road that they're releasing a "Star Trek Nemesis Special Edition" DVD, it's not quite the same thing as the Lord of the Rings Extended Edition. New Line never made any pretense about the fact that they were releasing 2 versions of the film: it was in every press release about the DVDs right from the beginning, and got a fair amount of press coverage.

There's a difference between releasing 2 versions of a film for different audiences (general public and devoted fans), and trying to soak the same audience twice. Since Paramount isn't saying anything about a Special Edition now, it will be interesting to see whether they "decide" on one later.

Is this it?

Is this going to be the only DVD or will there be a "Collector's Edition," "Special Edition," "Director's Edition," etc.? I got sick real fast of buying one version of the DVD only to have a better version come out soon after.

Will I buy this? I think not.

Darn darn darn.

I'm an avid Trekkie. I have the TNG Tech Manual. I love watching TOS, TNG and DS9. VOY is a bit of a chore to watch (insert suspension of belief here), and Enterprise hasn't even hit my sensors - the first few episodes turned me off. Since DS9 did that to me too, I'm optimistic about ENT doing that as well.... but at this point it's not likely.

Now that we know where I stand as a Trekkie, I can now say why I won't be buying the DVD, and why I didn't like the film. I'll even rant a bit!

1. I only saw Nemesis in the theatre twice. I didn't feel motivated to watch it again and again. Not even once again. I have the Trek movies 1-3 special editions. I love watching 2 & 3 over and over. I can live without seeing Nemesis again. Why? Because I think it failed to live up to hype. The script I read was very engaging, had awesome character moments, and seemed to balance the film very well. The trailer was well done! Even the trailer was a departure from the standard recycling of FX and music that modern Trek trailers have set as a standard. Then when I watched the movie, all the character moments, all the energy, all the synergy was gone. It's like all the crap I've read about "novelty continuity references" being made on ENT. Remember all the rants on these forums and others so many years ago about the "You people are all astronauts.. on some kind of Star Trek!" in FC? Damnit, I matured while watching these characters on the tube, and was excited to see the episodes every week. Even TNG's "Aquiel" couldn't turn me off. I cringed, I drank lots of beer to try to forget about the evil space dog. But, I wanted to watch these characters. When I watched Nemesis, I wanted to see the dialogue with Wes. I looked forward to the conversation between Data and Picard over a glass of wine. All the scenes that made me CARE about these characters. Then I find out that even these scenes won't make it on the DVD intact?! Give us all of them, or none at all.

2. Maybe Paramount is saving a super-duper special edition for later in the year - like LOTR did. Well... Nemesis doesn't even compare to LOTR. And there is no way in HELL I'm dropping coin on TWO copies of Nemesis. You want my money Paramount? Gimme a reason to buy.

3. The director wasn't passionate about doing Nemesis - go ahead and quote articles and crap - but the shabby job Baird did speaks for itself. He did the same crappy job on the Bond franchise. He called Burton’s Geordie an alien while on the set for freak's sake. Get writers and producers and staff who want to put out a QUALITY product that challenges our intellect and makes us think. Look at shows like Buffy, FarScape, and 24. If TNG was running today, I dare say that “Chain of Command” part two could hold up against them.

4. B&B. Yep - I don't like em. Flame away, but these two don't LIVE Star Trek like Gene did... like some of the devouts on this board do. Gene believed in Trek - he saw it as the peak that we could reach as a species, and a goal that we could all strive towards. Gene used Trek as a vehicle to explore current issues and examine moral dilemmas... while ENT and VOY are all about the aliens of the week and strutting our superiority as "evolved humans" around the galaxy. I'm surprised Janeway didn't wave an American flag after every episode. Star Trek has stopped being ethnically and culturally diverse, and become a vehicle for the preaching of American pride. B&B are micromanaging Trek to death - pick one job title and do the job. They're trying to manage it the same way Gene did, but for a different reason: the almighty buck. The quality of the storytelling and the state of denial that B&B are in in failing to understand WHY Nemesis failed, and why ENT is currently failing. Who on ENT’s staff is passionate about the show? Do we have any stand-out writers like TNG and DS9 did? Now, feel free to flame away about “this is only ENT’s second season, it took TNG three and DS9 four to get their stride”. But you’d think that the powers that be would know how to streamline this process down after three similar shows. If you do a job repeatedly, don’t you find ways to get it done more efficiently?! Whoops – gotta stay on topic. Nemesis. Nemesis.

I haven't posted on this board for quite some time, as my interest in Star Trek has declined as of late. The comments made by Berman lately "I don't know why no one liked the film… I did!" and his failure to accept responsibility is, to me, a death stroke to Trek. Steve has mentioned several times that B&B do in fact lurk these boards occasionally, and although I feel kind of ridiculous typing for twenty minutes while I should be paying attention to other things, I just can't sit and lurk anymore. Trek is dying, and we do need to get our arses in gear and do something about it. And don't gimme this "they won't listen to us fans" crap, because that's what saved TOS, and that's what Berman isn't seeing - we've all become armchair quarterbacks and we come here, vent our brains out, bicker at each other and flame away. Think about how we can turn that energy into something that can have a positive impact on the show - the franchise that we love so dearly.

So…. to sum it ALL up: I won’t buy it. I’ll rent it to see the deleted scenes and special features, but to buy a movie of this quality on DVD… and have to possibly buy it again when they come out with another Special Edition is a waste of anyone’s hard-earned cash. Especially my own.

All right... enough already. Now back to my b33r.

STAR TREK needs Bennett and Meyer in the worst way...

After having just finished watching the Special Features of the STAR TREK IV DVD, I'm convinced more than ever that the only men to replace Berman and Braga are Harve Bennett and Nicholas Meyer (along with Peter David, if he were up to it). These guys know what the hell they're talking about when discussing STAR TREK, and they'd be the only ones I can think of who could possibly do the franchise justice. I realize NEMESIS has it's admirers, and that's fine, but it's still LIGHT-YEARS away from the glory of KHAN, VOYAGE HOME and UNDISCOVERED. I've tried a number of times to give ENTERPRISE a shot, but I CANNOT sit through an entire episode. Count me in as a fan who'd like to see the movies go on sabbatical and ENTERPRISE off the air. Get someone involved with TREK who's got brains, passion and talent to spare... something Berman & Braga sorely lack. Their version of STAR TREK is completely bloodless.

Does anyone know any email or snail mail address for writing the folks at Paramount. I wonder how many of these concerns from us fans on the boards actually get to people like Rick Berman. So is it somehow possible to get an email to these people to ask them "PLEASE put all of the deleted scenes on the DVD if you can". Obviously a personal email account wouldn't be expected, but something to at least go through someone at Paramount in the Trek offices?

Just a thought.

Well I think that these scenes (along with just a couple others) should have been IN the film. Then *everything* else should go in a gallery. Thus, I won't buy this one.

What about Wesley?
By John ( ) at 11:01:12 on March 07 2003

What about the scenes with Wes at the wedding? Regardless of how you feel about him, this probably being the last TNG film they should include his speaking scenes at the wedding.

All the stuff left out of the film is the reason why I think I felt a little empty watching it because I knew where the missing pieces belonged and made me mad, especially when we actually see Wes at the wedding table. I also agree this should be a Special Edition release, why not do it now instead of until after Insurrection is done this way in another year or so.
