As UPN's hip-hop drama PLATINUM is set to premiere next month on the STAR TREK network (story), the rap genre will provide the inspiration for another potential program on the struggling netlet, which is seeking to attract a more multicultural audience moving forward after disappointing ratings declines this season.

Rap star 'Eve' will star in a new comedy pilot for UPN. Eve recently won a Grammy Award with rocker Gwen Stefani for their song "Let Me Blow Your Mind," has two platinum albums of her own, and recently appeared in the film BARBERSHOP.

Yahoo! News reports that the sitcom pilot will be executive produced by David Janollari, who also developed the comedy LIVING SINGLE for then-rap star Queen Latifah, who has now gone on to be nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in CHICAGO. Janollari says there couldn't be a better home for Eve's project than UPN.

"Queen Latifah stepped onto that stage and we never looked back -- she was a terrific actress," he said. "We have the same feeling about Eve for this project. Eve's a natural to come to TV. Her persona and her fan base (are) absolutely perfect for UPN."

The show will situate Eve as a fashion designer in search of love. This brings the UPN comedy pilot count for the fall season up to six, according to The Futon Critic, where you can find a complete index of all the pilots the ENTERPRISE network has in the works.

Who really cares?

Y'know, I could care less about UPN's other shows. Unless they're sci-fi, or use writers or actors or even production folks who came from Trek series, I don't see why there there need to be posts about other UPN shows here.

If UPN were to go belly up it wouldn't matter. If it meant the end of ENT, then it would be because nobody thought it was even worth syndicating. Trek doesn't need UPN. Maybe it actually would be better off not catering to a network - it sure seems that TNG and DS9 had no problems with getting viewers or having compelling characters and episodes, and they were syndicated.

As anyone familiar with TOS knows, Trek and networks just don't mix. Networks make dumb decisions that adversely affect Trek series. Trek should go syndicated again.
