The fifth STAR TREK feature film will arrive on special collector's edition DVD later this year and while it won't include a recut version of the film from director William Shatner, fans can look forward to engaging remarks by the actor.

The details of the release have yet to be announced, but producer Robert Meyer Burnett revealed in an interview at DVDFile that his company Ludovico Technique is producing the STAR TREK V set.

"My company... is finishing up STAR TREK V for Paramount, which I'm excited about because I think I managed to get William Shatner to give the most candid interview of his career," Burnett told Peter M. Bracke in an extensive interview that focuses on the new X-MEN 1.5 DVD.

The producer also follows up on recent remarks by Mark Altman (story) about a sequel to the comedy FREE ENTERPRISE, saying the film is officially underway and all rights have been secured.

You can read the full interview, in which Burnett talks at length about producing the first X-MEN DVD (sans commentary from 'Professor X' Patrick Stewart due to NEMESIS obligations) and the medium in general, here.

We have recently read the comments in which you had informed William Shatner that you had no desire to pursue a restored Director's Edition DVD of his film 'Star Trek V The Final Frontier'. Not only are many fans upset by your decision not to pursue such restored effort, but also bothered Mr. Shatner to publisly express his displeasure in your decision.

As you are probably aware, there is sufficient documentation of elements resulting in approximately 10-15 minutes of additional footage that could be successfully restored to Star Trek V, along with the film's original ending, and with the advancement of visual effects and computer generated imagery in films today, these elements should be considered in properly restoring Star Trek V to the way Mr. Shatner had originally envisioned.

We, the Star Trek fans, feel that William Shatner should be given the opportunity to restore the film and produce a Director's Edition. This is an issue of fairness and respect that has been extended to Mr Robert Wise and Mr Nicholas Meyer with their respective Director's Cut of their films, and to not extend the same cortesy toward Mr Shatner is a major misstep that hurts both Mr Shatner and your company. William Shatner is one off the most identifiable personas connected with the entire Trek franchise and community, and to deny him the privilege of completing his film for a DVD release is only disrespectful toward your company and Mr Shatner.

Therefore, we request that you reconsider your decision and allow William Shatner the opportunity to complete Star Trek V The Final Frontier for a Director's Edition DVD release. Such a move can be beneficial to your company, to Mr Shatner, and to the many fans who have supported Star Trek and Paramount over the years.

We (Bill Williams and myself) created a petition for a Director's Cut of Trek V and in 3 months, got 2622 signatures. Check the petition at(www.PetitionOnline.com/mod_perl/signed.cgi?TrekV). At Shatner's official site, Lisabeth Shatner posted her thoughts and said that Mr Shatner was really touched by the response thus far with the petition.

I don't know that Free Enterprise warrants a sequel, personally. Even if you liked the film, I don't think it warrants it. I thought it was...okay. I would have been better if it was about Shatner annoying the hell out of these guys, trying to make his horrible movie. But is was just a romantic comedy with Shatner cameos now and again. And their meeting Shatner, and learning who he is as a person has almost no impact on their lives, excluding a few brief discussions about it.

I just saw it for the first time a couple of weeks ago, and I thought the writing was kind of juvenile, and full of itself at times. And it was waaay to long for what they were delivering, which was basically recirculating the same argument over and over again.

The Shatner rap at the end was totally worth it though! Totally. ;-)

It's just too bad Paramount wouldn't let Shatner redo ST5 to some extent. Would've been neat. I'll be interested to hear what Shatner has to say on this commentary, though. I always liked the Kirk/Spock/McCoy stuff in ST5, personally.
