Executive producer
Rick Berman speaks in the UK's Star Trek Monthly, issue #103, making some of the first remarks regarding the promised "change" in the fifth STAR TREK series for its third season. He talks about the newly-revealed season finale, "The Expanse," saying it will begin to alter the Enterprise's mission for next season.
"I think our final episode of the season is going to be quite startling because we're going to do a cliffhanger that will put a new twist on the series as it enters its third year," Berman said in excerpts available at StarTrekUK.com. "I don't really want to get specific about it, but we're not talking about a tiny change. We're talking about a change that is going to, to some degree, alter our mission and, to some degree, change the tone of the series. We're very excited by it. This idea will be introduced partially in the final episode of this season and then more dramatically dealt with in the opener next season."
As revealed by TrekWeb and other sources earlier this week, "The Expanse" will continue a Klingon story arc beginning in "Judgment" and also introduce an attack on planet Earth.
The exec also talks for the first time about the Borg episode "Regeneration," which he says will find an interesting way to work the Borg into the pre-Picard [Patrick Stewart] time period.
"One of [the last four episodes] is going to be a fascinating Borg encounter," he told the mag. "Which is interesting in that Starfleet had never heard of the Borg before Picard. So we have managed to deal with that in what I feel is a very interesting fashion."
Berman also hints that season three will bring in more NX-class Starfleet ships. Information for "The Expanse" has already revealed that we'll be seeing some lesser-Starfleet vessels in this year's finale.
"It's very possible," he says when asked about more NX ships. "It will not happen in Season Two, but possibly soon after."
Berman says the staff has discussed all sorts of crossovers from the previous series as well.
"We've discussed everything from a young 'Sarek' to 'Q' [John de Lancie] to 'Kirk' [William Shatner]. There are a lot of things in the mill. I'd love to work with John again. I adore him. All sorts of ideas are in discussion now."
