The official STAR TREK
web site has posted several additional convention reports for its coverage of last weekend's Grand Slam XI: The Sci-Fi Summit in Pasadena, CA, by
Creation Entertainment. Friday's festivities concluded with appearances by VOYAGER cast members
Tim Russ,
Robert Picardo,
Ethan Phillips and even
Jennifer Lien. Picardo admitted to stalking VOYAGER producer
Brannon Braga to pitch story ideas frequently:
"I'm one of those actors who pesters the writers all the time," he said. "Brannon Braga does an impression of me hiding in the bushes, so when he comes out of his office, I jump out and pitch a story to him. I've had a lot of ideas, some of which they liked and some of which they didn't. When Seven of Nine came on the show, I suggested the way that we relate to each other, that the Doctor, who had learned so much about humanity from his mentor, Kes, decided to turn around and mentor Seven of Nine. I just thought it was such a silly notion, that the Doctor thought he knew how to be a human being better than a real human being."
Phillips continued with the humorous air, revealing "Neelix had a huge crush on the captain, and if you watch the show, whenever I have a scene with Kate [Mulgrew], you'll [see] Neelix staring at her with love in his eyes. That was my secret, as the character."
Saturday kicked off with DS9's Armin Shimerman and GENERATIONS' Alan Ruck, and then celebrated with an onslaught of original series stars: Walter Koenig, Jimmy Doohan, Nichelle Nichols, William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy.
Doohan was looking well and joked about his sizeable contribution to the STAR TREK legacy: "They had difficulty naming the character, and I said, 'How about Scotty?' And they said, 'Oh, that fits!'" As other changes were made to the character, Doohan says he suggested other things as well. "Anything I suggested, they usually accepted, which was always my intention anyway!"
Shatner and Nimoy appeared together, riffing off one another and entertaining the crowd: "Leonard, your whole book is filled with naked women!" exclaimed Shatner about Nimoy's SHEKHINA. "That's a tough job! What technique!" Quipped Nimoy: "Have you been studying it carefully?"
