British magazine Dreamwatch offers some tantalizing new details about the ENTERPRISE season finale, "The Expanse," in its latest issue. Previous reports have indicated that the finale will have Earth under attack and Archer on the run from the Klingon 'Duras', and that the episode would change the mission of the series going into its third season. Tidbits from the magazine suggest a few more details about the show's story.

According to Dreamwatch, the NX-01 will head into a Bermuda Triangle-like region of space known as "the expanse" in the episode, against the advice of the Vulcans. The ship's mission? Prevent "a new alien race from wiping out life on Earth."

Does this suggest that the damage glimpsed on the Floridian peninsula in the finale may be caused by an unknown alien threat? The magazine is vague but does reveal the "The Expanse" will tie into the Temporal Cold War storyline that has populated the show's premiere, finale, and Sweeps episodes since the pilot "Broken Bow." Apparently some recurring characters--whether new or previously introduced--may need to appear in season three as a direct result of the events in this year's season finale.

"The Expanse" airs on UPN May 21st. Thanks to TrekToday for the excerpts from issue 104 of Dreamwatch Magazine.

This all makes sense...

When I first saw the title "The Expanse" my first thought was that it was refering to a section of space. Also, the Klingons are already a part of the Temporal Cold War going back to "Broken Bow". In the same was the Enterprise crew is, unwilling.

But don't expect the Klingons to be too much involved in the Temporal Cold War. Archer will go home, see the place attacked and begin to blame it on the Klingons (this is where the Klingons begin to spark their long feud with Starfleet/Federation). They'll realize that it is not them and have to go to this "Expanse" to figure out what the hell is going on.

Upon arrival, who will it be?

Romulans - Doubtful, although not completely impossible. Romulan-Earth War isn't set until about Season 4 or 5 anyways. So it NOT being them is just as much of a possibility has it being them.

Tholians - More of a possibility than Romulans. This species served a mysterious, unsolved role in "Future Tense".

Borg - All I can say is "Please God No". Enough said.

Suliban - They did say "new species". The above three are more "new" to ENT era than Suliban, so I can 100% say it won't be them.

A new species we have never heard of? I don't think so in my opinion. They already introduced a "home-made" species to play a main role in the TCW, and that was the Suliban. Chances are, they won't make a second.

My pick for this "new" species will be: The Orion Pirates - We haven't heard a thing about them in ages and they seem the perfect addition to this TCW.

I am probably stretching it, but that's just my point of view.

New aliens?

Well it's difficult to cobble together any real complete storyline from all these spoilers, at least until the production report links them all together. But it seems like Earth will be attacked and then Archer sent into the expanse to find these aliens, almost kind of like how DS9's third season started with "The Search" for the Founders after the destruction of the Odyssey by the Jem'Hadar.

But this Dreamwatch info sounds like we're talking some new alien foe being responsible for the Earth attack. I hope that this is perhaps only at the beginning, with Starfleet not knowing who's responsible until in the end it turns out to be one of the already-established powers like the Romulans, Tholians or Suliban. Introducing an entirely new foe at this point would only be hodgepodge.

As to this tying into the Temporal Cold War, again, only time will tell. I was kind of looking forward to a finale that started an entirely new mythology since the TCW has sort of been a non-starter for me. But then I suppose you could say that about the X-FILES mythology so early in its run so it's difficult to judge. I did think the arc took a good turn in "Future Tense," but I question the Suliban alone as credible villains, and I think there's a lot of material for conflict in this era without the TCW, like the Romulan Wars and the Klingon hostilities and perhaps the beginnings of the Orion Pirates. But then again I suppose ENT could posit that the Federation wouldn't have been formed if it weren't for the TCW having created such havoc in the 22nd century.

But again, no judgment can be made until at least we know the facts for sure, and of course watching the episode will be the final arbiter.
