Toy maker Art Asylum, which produces the current lines of ENTERPRISE and STAR TREK NEMESIS action figures and vehicles, also produces a unique line of TREK collectibles: the MiniMates.

The MiniMates are 3" tall poseable caricature figures, crafted by Art Asylum designers. According to a company press release, Asylum is providing 5,000 special "Trouble With Tribbles" 'Captain Kirk' editions to online Toy destination Figures.com.

Art Asylum president Adam Unger says he's happy to provide the piece to the online retailer and toy news network.

"I think the Kirk with Tribbles piece will be the hottest Star Trek MiniMate to date, and I'm happy it's in the hands of a company that cares about the fans as much as we do," Unger said in the release.

The "Tribbles" MiniMate comes bundled with a string of tribbles and a hand phaser and is billed by Figures.com as bringing "to life one of the classic moments from this episode when Captain Kirk's smirk shows his resignation to the utter silliness of the situation."

This quirky toy won't be available until June 2003, but you can pre-order yours for $6.99 at Figures.com.

To those of you who say that this stuff won't sell--I have a set of the TOS minimates. I think they're cool.

And you know what? Just about any TOS stuff will sell, because most people still like TOS. Even if it's only, "Hey, look! It's Dr. Spock! I gotta have that!", you're not going to see the same kind of thing with "Oooh, look! Garak!"

So just realize that TOS has a market that's pretty undertapped.

They are gonna lose some money on this one. I predict we'll see a lot of these in the bargain bin at Toys R Us.

Spock and his sehlat? Shirtless Kirk? Riker in the oil slick? The thoughts boggle the mind... :)
