STAR TREK stalwart Patrick Stewart has gone back to his roots lately, with a special one-man show at his old stomping grounds in Mirfield, England. According to the Huddersfield Daily Examiner, Stewart appeared at Dewsbury Town Hall to benefit the Gilder Hall Youth Club, where he first learned the acting trade.

"Patrick entered the stage to a jazzy rendition of the theme to STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION and set out his plan to have a conversation with the audience," wrote Paul Chan for the Examiner, which will run an extended review of the evening in the Sunday edition tomorrow.

The performance included riffs on the STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION opening monologue, the character 'Oberon' from A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM, the Agincourt speech from HENRY V, and a segment from his popular one-man rendition of A CHRISTMAS CAROL. Stewart even threw in a reading of JB Priestley's final Postscript monologue, short news segments broadcast on the BBC during the Second World War, and some childhood anecdotes.

The actor also reminisced with the Examiner about his youthful days growing up in Mirfield and attending the Gilder Hall.

"It was there that I was first encouraged to read Shakespeare out loud," he told the paper's Jane Yelland. working for the Mirfield Reporter. "Fitness was very much a part of the activities there... Nobody had a computer, or a TV or a video. It was the primary source of recreation."

Stewart also recalled his time working for the Mirfield Reporter.

"If I had had decent shorthand I might still be in that job now," he says in the interview of his brief stint as a journalist.
