New Space, New Race for Season Finale as UPN Dares Fans "Not to Return" (SPOILERS)

UPN publicity makes a bold move today in its announcement about the ENTERPRISE season finale, "The Expanse." Billing the episode as "a finale that dares the Trekkie fans not to return," UPN reveals that for the end of the season it's going to be new space, new race, and new mission for 'Captain Archer' and his crew.

Confirming previous reports about the finale, UPN's synopsis of the episode confirms that Earth will be attacked by a strange new alien foe and the NX-01 sent on a mission to find the culprits and prevent the ultimate destruction of Earth by venturing inside a Bermuda Triangle-like region of space.

"In the season finale, Earth is savagely attacked by a mysterious alien probe that leaves millions of people killed. When Archer learns that the culprit species is planning to destroy the entire planet with their next assault, Enterprise embarks on a new mission into the dangerous and highly mysterious Delphic Expanse to put a stop to it. Although T'Pol is given a direct order from the Vulcan High Command not to participate in this mission, she resigns her post in order to continue with Enterprise. Meanwhile, the Klingons, who are bent on destroying Archer, continue their hot pursuit of Enterprise all the way into the expanse."

The episode wrapped production Monday under the direction of veteran Allan Kroeker, from a script by producers Rick Berman and Brannon Braga. The episode is slated to air May 21st on UPN.

The network has also released its official synopsis for "Bounty," the second-to-last episode of the season airing in a double-billing May 14th.

"After contracting a virus on an away mission, T'Pol begins to prematurely experience severe symptoms of Pon Farr, the Vulcan mating cycle in which she has to mate or else die. She begins to make advances on Phlox as well as Reed in her burning desire to mate, forcing the crew to find a solution. Meanwhile, Archer is kidnapped by a bounty hunter who has been hired by the Klingons to bring him back to their planet where a bounty has been put on his head for escaping from their prison."

"Bounty" was directed by Roxann Dawson from a script by Mike Sussman, Phyllis Strong and Hans Tobeason.

"New alien foe": who could it be?

God, let it be the Romulans, please!! If B&B go off and create a new race for the crew of ENT to deal with, I swear I will stop watching this show and beg others to do the same. My hope is that maybe if it is the Romulans, the Romulan Wars will tie into the bigger picture of the Temporal Cold War and the first two mediocre seasons of ENT was just leading us into a grand new era of Star Trek storytelling.

How many "new" aliens do we have now?

I must admit, my opinion of Enterprise goes back and forth between "What the heck are they trying to pull?" to "Hey, maybe their learning and returning to the original formula, finally."

It seems like it is getting better, but for about six months I didn't care if I ever saw another Enterprise episode again. My loss of interest started after seeing last year's season finale and thinking, "Do they think we are ~that~ stupid?" The season one finale had so many inconsistencies I lost interest.

What brought me back was that I had read some "rumors" there was going to be some continuity creeping into the writing. I had read at several Trek websites that the Klingons were going to be popping up, the Borg also (with a great explanation of HOW they got in that time period), Andorians too ... My first thought was, "Wow, this sounds like Star Trek!"

Star Trek is what I want to watch ... Why else would I buy ALL of the Original Series on VHS, ALL of The Next Generation on VHS (I eventually gave the VHS tapes to my Mom as a gift and then purchased the DVDs for myself), MOST of Deep Space Nine on VHS and DVD, and most of Voyager on VHS? Why would someone do such a thing?

If I wanted ~NEW~ aliens I'd have been watching Andromeda or Babylon 5 or any of the other Star-Trek-Rip-Offs. If I wanted a ~NEW~ reinvented Star Trek I never would have become a fan in the first place.

So, now I'm curious after reading about the Season 2 Finale synopsis ... Am I going to go another 6 months after watching it, not caring if I ever see another Enterprise episode ever again? The only thing I liked about the synopsis is that the Klingons will be in it.

Frankly, I don't care if B&B run the show or not ... But the fans aren't asking for ~NEW~ aliens, their asking for new writers and producers who know what Star Trek is about.

Can't return if I never stayed to watch in the first place.

Nice try UPN.

T'Pol's Pon Far is the new threat
By aquirius ( ) at 12:43:32 on April 09 2003

Ok I understand that a disease is infecting T'Pol, hence she gets the Pon Far. But, why do we need to have her getting the Pon Far during the season finale, because it's supposed to be sexy. Beside the fact that female Vulcans don't go through Pon Far, only the males do. Having a disease infect T'Pol so that she can get the Pon Far is a ridiculous plot ploy, not to mention sends a wave of confusion about contunuity. Damn she is one disease infested whoe.

New aliens again! Why not introduce TOS aliens into the mix? Wait screw that, why introduce another alien menice at all? (Stop... I do like the introduction of the Tellerites, but a new galactic threat, come on)We have the Suliban/Tholian TCW threat, The Andorian/Vulcan dispute, Klingon hostilities growing, The Romulan's waiting in the wings to swoop in and start a war. Why do we need a new threat that was never established in TOS, while we haven't even fleshed out the already existing threats on the show. I imagine season five, six, and/or seven will depict one big cluster f*ck.

It dares us every week by being so bad!

nah hehe :P

but anyway - like I always always say - millions dead, whatever. They have to SHOW US the paradise that is under threat before we can even care that earth has been attacked - and that doesn't mean showing florida as a crator from space!

You've got to show it on the ground, what people are doing and saying. They pulled itoff in a late Voyager epiosde (a CGI city that is) don't be scared of showing us Earth beyond SF Bridge! If, as per usual (DS9: Paradise Lost/BOBW/First Contact) don't show us how amazing Earth is, and what is at stake then the audience can't identify or care.

New? Sounds kind of ambiguous...

After all, if you've never seen a Romulan, they're new to you!

It could mean anything. It could be a new species, new species to ENT, an old species that got lip service in the old shows, etc.

What is this? Sixth grade?

I've been watching all along. They don't have to dare me to return. They just have to dare to tell great stories every week.

Worf: Sir, the Federation DOES have enemies. We MUST seek them out!

Picard: Oh yes. That's how it starts. But the road from legitimate suspicion to rampant paranoia is very much shorter than we think. Something is wrong here Mr. Worf.

yeah, that's all well and good and everything, but how many times has enterprise introduced "new aliens" that anyone actually gave two craps about? it's still gonna be the same thing, more than likely, with the B&B writting it. no matter how "evil" these aliens may be, ten bucks says there will be a story where one of the aliens tries to have sex with someone or something. cause, you know, that's sensual.

"Dare fans to return" is probably the WORST marketing slogan EVER! UPN owes us an apology. :-{
