ENT Continues to Set New Lows in Overnights as "Judgment" Declines Further

PROMENADE

Just when you thought last week's broadcast of "The Crossing" was a low-baller for the latest STAR TREK series, scoring the second-smallest audience of the show's history (story) and the lowest overnight rating of 2003 (story), the news just doesn't seem to get any better.

Last night's first-run presentation of the Klingon episode "Judgment" guest starring J.G. Hertzler bested "Crossing"'s 3.9/6 overnight rating narrowly to take the crown for lowest overnight of 2003 with a 3.8/6 according to MediaWeek's Marc Berman. ENTERPRISE did beat rival DAWSON'S CREEK (2.8/4) during the eight o'clock hour, which was dominated by the half-hour presentation of AMERICAN IDOL on Fox at 8:30, which garnered a whopping 12.5/18.

"Judgment" becomes the second-lowest episode in the overnight figures, still comfortably above "Vanishing Point"'s 3.4 last November. ENTERPRISE peaked in February with 4.5/7 overnight performances by both "Future Tense" and "Canamar," although "Cease Fire" actually drew the most viewers thusfar this year with 4.78m.

UPN didn't fare any better overall last night, coming in sixth place with a nightly average of 2.9/4 compared to the WB's 3.1/4.

You can read the original report here. Final rating and audience data for "Judgment" will be available next week.

What's with so many people wanting ENT on CBS?

In the past, I thought that maybe disolving UPN and putting ENT onto CBS's primetime lineup would be a good thing for the show. Ratings would increase, of course. But now after reading many posts below I do not think it would be a large increase or enough of a one to make a difference. If Paramount and B&B used the same formulas for ENT on CBS that they do on UPN, I guarantee the show would be cancelled(or at least not renewed at the end of the season).

I imagine the ratings would look great compared to the current figures for ENT, but I am positive the show wouldn't crack the top 50 on the Nielsons chart. And I am also positive the budget would be higher on CBS. Mark my words, if they put ENT in it's current state on main network TV, it will get killed off quite quickly, and Paramount knows it.

This should have been last weeks episode

Although the episode was rather boring I think they would have been better off if it aired last week becuase it was much better than that swill they call " the crossing".

Having a poor episode air after a 1 month hiatus is not going to bring viewers back. After going a month without watching ENT it is easy to forget to watch it when it comes back on. If you couple that with giving a poor episode to the fans that did remeber to watch you give them less incentive to watch the next week. All this leads to less viewers with neilsen boxes watching ENT.

Another effect may be hockey playoffs. Some UPN markets play hockey games as well.

Well, what could you expect?

After experiencing last week's "The Crossing", anyone tuning in for another helping of Enterprise must either be a masochist, a diehard, or (in what may be a truly redundant category), both.

Too bad, because as it turned out there were probably far worse ways to spend an hour last night than watching "Judgement". But until episodes like this represent just the average of what Enterprise is capable of, and not the near-peak of an otherwise sorry season, viewers will continue to tune out.

Do the ratings REALLY matter?

Maybe someone can clear this up for me- but do the ratings REALLY matter? After all, reports indicate that Enterprise will be renewed for a third season, regardless of how poorly its episodes have played this season. So I ask, why does it matter? It doesn't seem to have an impact on the future of Enterprise.

As for promoting Enterprise, they have- they put a trailer prior to showings of NEMESIS. Of course, given its paltry box office and short theatrical stay, it is doubtful it was seen by many people. Perhaps the folks at Paramount looked at this and concluded that promoting Enterprise doesn't work, since it didn't on NEMESIS.

Here in Milwaukee Enterprise was not on due to the basketball game, so we won't get to see it till Saturday. Also, don't forget Yesterday was a big news day for the war.

Why it lost ratings

I'll tell you why this happened. Before the episode airs on UPN, some people downloaded it from the net. Then I noticed that some of them come over to TrekWeb and made posts like "Poor Judgment" which made the claim that the episode were no good. A lot of the visitors to this site immediately felt disappointed, some said they were not going to watch the episode for this reason. Now if we assume that many more people visit this site than post and that the number of posters to that Thread is only half of the regulars that come to this site (that's Sarcasm). That would double the number of people that were influenced by this post. I read that post and had feels of disappointment, but I didn't post a response. But I watched the episode to made my own judgment. Now if we take into account the number of people who watched the downloaded version of the ep. And then take account of all the fan site for Trek and assume that word does get around on the World Wide Web (that's Sarcasm). We can assume that some if not several fan sites heard that this was a poor ep. And assume that other people were influenced like they were on this site (that too is Sarcasm), and then it is save to conclude that an early leak spoiled this episode. I personally felt that this was a fine episode.

People need to stop relying on leaked info and find out for themselves and make their own judgments.

These naysayers are conspiring to kill Star Trek and they are using the fan base to do it.

This is getting pretty bad

Looks like the negative buzz about "Crossing" certainly didn't help ENT this week. At what point will UPN start promoting the damn show? And where are all the interviews they could be giving to press to hype up these last 8 episodes? Even if the show DID improve, the way UPN refuses to advertise it will always be a severe impediment to increasing the audience. And why not use TNN to promote it to the TREK fans who are watching TNG repeats? Whatabout sticking trailers on DVDs? Whatabout billboards and newspaper and TV Guide ads? Have they given up or what?
