ENTERPRISE star Scott Bakula may be hopping aboard the real U.S.S. Enterprise soon. According to The Captain's Chair, part of the Project Quantum Leap fan club, Bakula will accompany Entertainment Tonight reporter Marc Steinas on a tour of the Navy's aircraft carrier, currently moored in Norfolk, VA and undergoing an overhaul before deployment later this year.

According to the report, Bakula will also be accompanied by his father, Stewart, himself a former Navy pilot, and the actor's publicist Jay D. Schwartz. Steinas is no stranger to Bakula news, having been given the first tour of the NX-01 sets in July of 2001 to ET. The Captain's Chair indicates that the visit will occur later this month and ET coverage should appear sometime after April 30th.

This visit comes on the heels of the second guest appearance by Enterprise CVN 65 "Sailors of the Year" on the show. Last year the episode "Desert Crossing" featured cameos from 2002's winners and just recently Petty Officer Kathy J. Grant (Senior Sailor of the Year), Petty Officer James D. Frey (Junior Sailor of the Year) and Corpsman Thomas P. Hunt filmed a brief stint in May 14th's "First Flight" (story).

The Big E, as the Navy calls the ship, is the "world's first and finest nuclear-powered aircraft carrier," accoriding to its official web site. You can read the original report here.

I served aboard Enterprise from 1993 to 96 in Deck Department, then Operations. While the ship is awesome and the power of the technology at my fingertips was almost unbearably immense, remembering also brings bad memories.

The end result of my tour was that I loved the tech and everything about the ship, but came to despise many of the people. Thieves and/or ass-kissers for the most part. Backstabbers ran rampant.

When I hear about the Sailors of the Year coming on the show, it makes me shudder. The sailors of the year I knew were there simply because they wormed their way into a job where they did nothing, giving them ample time to study and excel in the knowledge needed for such an award. NOTE: I realize this is not true of all of those who receive Sailor of the Year.

But as I said, it definitely wasn't all bad. I grew up out there, and learned a tremendous amount about people and the world.

This would be a great Enterprise episode. They could copy Star Trek IV and have Archer get captured yet again, like Chekov did on the carrier Enterprise. That way it would be unoriginal and stay true to what Enterprise is all about.

Is main question is, "Is this a field trip to bolster bakula's actor career and the show/franchise in general?", or are they "there to learn"?.

They could learn a lot

They could learn a lot from this visit to a real US naval vessel. Backula can learn how a real Captain handles his crew. If they made Enterprise mimic the functions and inner workings of a real naval vessel the show would be a lot more realistic.

That's great! I was hoping that the paths of ENTERPRISE and the U.S.S. Enterprise would converge.
