Eugene "Rod" Roddenberry, Jr. has teamed up with Atmosphere Pictures and filmmaker
Scott Colthorp to document STAR TREK fandom in a film called TREK NATION. Intended to "celebrate" fan culture rather than mock it, like the 1997 film TREKKIES by
Roger Nygard, Roddenberry says he wants to explore the impact of his father's sci-fi creation on people all over the world.
"One of the ideas behind the documentary is to explore how far STAR TREK has gone, how many cultures it's touched, how many boundaries it's pierced," Roddenberry told SyFy Portal. "Finding out day after day about different countries, diferrent kinds of people who have found this idea, and that it's permeated in so many places, it says something."
The film will include interviews with fans and celebrities about the franchise, something Roddenberry hopes will break down common stereotypes surrounding sci-fi fandom.
"I think Eddie Murphy would be a great interview," Roddenberry said. "If we can get some names out there, some that people didn't know are STAR TREK fans like (former Vice President) Al Gore, Bill Gates, Eddie Murply, an all-star cast that aren't known as STAR TREK fans, I think we can really bring people in to see this. That's really saying something about STAR TREK. I think it's going to open up some doors in their head and see what the show is."
The film follows the narrative of the younger Roddenberry as he explores his father's legacy shortly after his death. Eugene was a teenager at the time.
"I think Rod tells a good story about his father's funeral," Colthorp told the site. "It sort of dawned on him, it was 'Oh my God!' He wanted to search for his father and the legacy he left behind. Probably if there was a central theme, it would be that as Rod discovers his father's legacy, he discovers how influential STAR TREK was on people."
Roddenberry says the documentary will include home video footage of his father at home, in the hopes of dispelling the myth that the creator of STAR TREK was anything more than a regular man.
"I know he did drugs, I know that he had affairs, but the fact that he was flawed makes me love him more. My father proved that anyone can do this, anyone can accomplish what he did. There are so many talented fans out there. They need to be inspired to write, or become and actor, and realize that Hollywood is not as intimidating as people think."
