Brannon Braga Answers Fan Questions, Says Takes Criticism in Stride

ENTERPRISE co-creator and executive producer Brannon Braga chatted with fans at BrannonBraga.com last week and the exec says the sometimes constant criticism leveled at STAR TREK has to be taken in stride.

"I welcome criticism," he said. "It helps me keep the show fresh. But some people are so damn MEAN. It doesn't feel particularly good, but I just keep my head down and do my best. I also try to avoid the real nasty postings... Day to day, you just have to ignore it, or channel it in a constructive way - otherwise, you would be paralyzed with fear and depression. We do the most entertaining shows we can, while keeping Gene's vision alive. Despite the blistering comments. Just remember - this kind of negativity has been leveled at Trek over many years, in all of the series. TNG included!"

One fan asked the ubiquitous "gay character" question, to which Braga says it hasn't been entirely ingored by the franchise.

"This is a question we’ve been asked many times over the years. The answer is simple: if we can find a way to do it subtly, for a good story reason, then yes," he says. "But the trouble is, STAR TREK humans are tolerant of all cultures, so how do you portray a gay person without it seeming obvious? We have certainly dealt with gay rights many times on the show, however. Most recently in 'Stigma.'"

Another asked about the sexuality of Jolene Blalock's character, wondering whether it would be toned down any.

"There's been a lot of controversy about that," Braga said. "We are very, very careful not to objectify her or ANY member of the cast. However, you may have noticed that the men on the crew are pretty sexy, too. There is a Pon Farr episode coming up, though. Hope you're not offended by that."

No chat would be complete without a few tidbits for episodes to come:

"Before the season is through, you will see Silik and the Suliban again, and there will be plenty of thrilling special effects and ship to ship combat."

That makes everything better.

Pon Far is the end...

I hoped against hope that they could have resisted the urge to write a crappy, canned, titular Pon Far episode where Archer gets to be the reserved, controlled man and rebuke her advances out of respect for the fact that T'pol, although wildly sexy, isn't herself.....

yada, yada, yada...we've already seen the ep.

"Before the season is through, you will see Silik and the Suliban again, and there will be plenty of thrilling special effects and ship to ship combat."

Comments like this really annoy me. In a recent story we had a debate about what exactly science fiction is. Well, it most definitely is not simply "thrilling f/x and ship to ship combat." Unfortunately, this is what Braga thinks people like.

Yo, Braga: Voyager failed because of your "vision" of what sci-fi tv should be. Look to what makes a real show good, then see what ENT is lacking. Hell, just look at TNG. It investigated the characters and there was a real emotional investment in them. Haven't felt that with ENT yet.

And I'm sorry you don't like some of the "mean" posts. But dude, there's a way to fix that, you know. Start making some *quality* stories. Screw the stunt casting and chicks with big boobs and f/x and ship to ship combat. Start producing some good stories. Case in point: Carbon Creek. Awesome episode. How much f/x and combat was in there? ZERO. Give us more like that, and see what happens to the ratings. You don't have to be in outer space fighting an enemy to make an episode good.

Oh, spare me. After all the snide remarks he made about TOS during the 90's?? And as if TNG has some "special status" above all the other shows...

I found this interesting. Even if some of this is looked upon as bullshit by certain people, I still have high hopes that this show will turn around. Most of the points we complain about were brought up and told directly to the man (at least on of the men) in charge. He even asked the people what they wanted from the series.

It helps me keep the show fresh.

The last "fresh" episode of Star Trek that I can remember was One Small Step from Voyager. Most of Enterprise has been boring re-tread drek.

Apparently fan criticism hasn't been doing it's job.

We do the most entertaining shows we can, while keeping Gene's vision alive.

Y'know, I love "Gene's vision" and all, but ditch it if it means you're able to tell good stories. I mean, this is before Star Trek. How about showing us humanity growing up instead of already being there?

I could drive before I was ready. Why not Archer?

Just remember - this kind of negativity has been leveled at Trek over many years, in all of the series.

Yeah, but people still watched those.

But the trouble is, STAR TREK humans are tolerant of all cultures, so how do you portray a gay person without it seeming obvious?

You make being gay a part of their personal life, and when they're on duty you don't make it an issue. You don't seem to have a problem dealing with heterosexuality.

We have certainly dealt with gay rights many times on the show, however. Most recently in 'Stigma.'"

Somebody help me out here, it's been a while. In Stigma, the "gay" doctor is outed from normal Vulcan society because he can meld. Right? Because I must have missed the gay rights message they burried in there.

We are very, very careful not to objectify her [T'Pol] or ANY member of the cast.

The outfit objectifies her, to some degree, as the "Enterprise sex symbol". If you don't want her objectified, get her out of it, and into something less skin tight.

Personally, I thought Hoshi of the first half of the first season (up until about Sleeping Dogs) was the sexiest character on the show, partially because Linda Park is easy on the eyes, but also because of how she played the character.

However, you may have noticed that the men on the crew are pretty sexy, too.

Probably they are. You don't parade them around the ship in cat-suits, do you? Didn't think so.

Plenty of SFX? Ship-to-ship combat? Is that what STAR TREK is supposed to be about?

And we wonder why the show can't get any better...

Maybe I'm reading into that too much, but since when is an AIDS referenced show strictly a gay issue?

Last time I read about AIDS, it was spreading fastest in the black and female populations, which hardly makes it a gay issue.

I think Brannons comments make perfectly sense. As you can see, they DO have feelings that you can hurt. Why do you think producers are supposed to be super humans, that you can treat any way you want, and they should just obey or get out?

They are being treated like slaves of the franchine, and it's not good for any of us, or them.

It helps keep what he does Fresh?
That just shows you, that he doesnt pay attention.
He's obviously shut the comments and the fanbase out because we arent seeing anything Fresh.
Everytime I see a quote from B&B I laugh because its always just P.R crap and nothing ever changes to make the product of Trek Interesting and worth coming back to.
Braga, you need to remove yourself from the franchise.
Please take that as constructive critism.

Careful not to objectify T'Pol..

.....HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! HA! Yes, the padding that adds two cup sizes to her very professional work uniform, just like the men wear is very demure. The upcoming Bounty "B" story I'm sure will be in very good taste. It won't objectify her in the least. Just like something Doris Day and Rock Hudson would have done back in the day.

I wonder if Brannon's nose is bigger today.
