Berman On Borg, "The Expanse," and Changes for Season 3 (SPOILERS)

PROMENADE

Executive producer Rick Berman talks in the latest issue of the British magazine STAR TREK Monthly (Issue 104) about several of the upcoming episodes toward the end of the season. Although the interview was conducted several weeks ago, Berman reveals several new points about the episodes. One that fans will be eyeing carefully is "Regeneration," featuring the discovery of fragments from a Borg sphere on Earth.

"The interesting thing about the Borg is that nobody has really found them yet in the 22 Century, and as a result Archer and the others won't quite know who they've ran into," he says in excerpts transcribed at Sci-Fi Pulse. "There will be a definite tie in with events that occurred in STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT."

Berman also talks about the season finale, "The Expanse," and how it will influence the show's change in focus for next season.

"It's not so much a cliffhanger as it is a tantalising taste of what next season will bring," he reveals. "Next season will deal with Enterprise being sent on a mission that may last many episodes, but it's not going to be a serialised arc. The stakes are the future of planet Earth. They're going to be sent to a part of space they've never been before; a part of space the Vulcans warn is extremely dangerous. It's kind of our quadrant's Bermuda Triangle."

He goes on to say that characters will face new challenges and the Temporal Cold War storyline will play a big part.

"There are going to be significant changes," he says. "There will be changes in a number of our characters. I don't mean that we're changing characters. But we're going to see changes as we go into a very ominous section of space, and try to find an alien race that we have reason to believe is going to do everything they can to destroy Earth's population. Our knowledge of all this will come from elements of what we've been referring to as the Temporal Cold War."

You can read more from the exec on "Horizon," "The Breach," and "Cogenitor," as well as next season at Sci-Fi Pulse. You can also read excerpts of the magazine's new interview with Dominic Keating about the filming of this season's "Minefield" and other topics here.

Miracles was just cancelled by ABC. David Greenwalt was a writer on Buffy, a writer and producer and show-runner on Angel, and writer/producer/showrunner on Miracles. He is extremly talented.

Wouldn't it be awesome if he were to take over for Rick Berman as producer/show-runner on Enterprise? He would bring a whole new flavor to the show. I whole new feel. He doesn't fear multi-episode story arcs. He is willing to shake things up and put his characters through major life changing events. He is willing to kill off characters unexpectedly.

God, I'd LOVE to see what Greenwalt could do with Enterprise.

loosing his grip!

Does anyone else get the feeling that Berman is starting to loose creative control of this show? Maybe it?s willing, I don?t know? Not like his creative direction was ever that compelling. I just think it?s interesting. His comments have started to seem more generic than usual. It almost seems like Braga is telling him what to say. Is it just me?

Klingons in the Expanse

According to the press release the Klingons follow Enterprise into the Expanse. So here's a thought:

Perhaps during this stretch of episodes where Enterprise is making its way through the Delphic Expanse, Duras is pursuing them ala Crais or Scorpius from Farscape. The probe aliens eventually do turn out to be Romulans, and when Archer and co find out, they turn tail back to friendly space to alert Starfleet and Vulcan High Command. Duras, not about to leave empty handed, makes a deal with the Romulans, beginning the collaboration seen in TNG.

He said all the right things...

So, in brief, he said that the Borg thing won't be that Earth-shattering, the show will have a "new mission," there will be character development, and there will be a sweeping story arc. Sounds like things are going in the right direction now.

So, you've got the ship going into a new area of space and staying there for a while, dealing with one antagonist species. This will last many episodes.

And yet somehow it's not going to be a serialized arc? Does he know what an arc is?

Delphic Expanse=Badlands?

Could there be some relation between the two? After all, few ships that enter the Badlands return.

This is good news...

News of this level is great. Finding out there will be an "episodeS" to this, rather than just an episode and that concludes it is really a nice change of pace.

Season 3 could be ENT's "Dominion" season. Having a number of episodes span out about attempting to find these aliens. That could also mean that ENT will focus most of it's time on this alien and that's basically all I've ever wanted is some sort of a story arc.

What they say about ENT's characters changing. I am thinking we are looking at something like uniform changes, more involved Mayweather and a more "Kirk-like" Archer. The latest complaints from fans has forced B&B to make serious changes, so I also expect the "sex appeal" part of the show to be lowered in Season 3.

All I can say is "good luck", because B&B have a lot of repairs to make on their ship's haul.

Remarks + Additional fragments from the interview
By Timo ( ) at 18:28:17 on April 14 2003
URL: | User Info
1) "There will be changes in a number of our characters. I don't mean that we're changing characters." Then what *does* he mean? I don't get it.

2) This new premise sounds like Voyager, but instead of finding a way home, they'll be searching for this new alien species that wants to destroy Earth. I sure hope those aliens will have something of an original motive for this, because this plot device has been done to the death.

3) This new premise will result in largly abandoning all we've seen in the past two seasons. This is from the same interview:

BERMAN: The changes will take us away from a lot of things we've dealt with before, but not completely. We're not going to lose total touch with any of the species we've been involved with, whether it's the Suliban or Andorians. We've had a lot of fun with the Andorians this season, with jeff Combs [Shran] and some of the other actors. I never thought we'd be dealing with blue-skinned aliens with antennae, but the calibre of the stories and the fact that these are somewhat elusive creatures, with great actors performing the roles, is a lot of fun. We've just had Suzie Plakson playing an Andorian in an episode [Cease Fire]. So even with the changes, I'm pretty sure that we'll be seeing them again.

3) Wasn't one of the reasons for doing a prequel so that space could be dangerous again? I think it's safe to say that the addition of this artificial threath is the unofficial admission that those in charge have failed fulfilling the show's promise.
However, Berman will not even admit that the reason for this change is the drop in ratings or fan criticism. Another excerpt from that same interview:

STM: Why the changes?
BERMAN: I think it's motivated by our own desire to kind of kick-start the series a bit. We've been very pleased with the episodes from the last two seasons, but we feel it's time to make a course correction. It hasn't really come from any specific influence, like the fans or the network or the studio, but I think it's a good thing for the series and it's going to be a good thing for us. It's going to be fun for us. It's still going to be Star Trek. It's still going to be Enterprise. But we're going to heat things up a little bit.

In the interview, Berman also said his favorite species are the Klingons and that Judgment is his favorite episode of 2nd season.

A tale, told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing
By The Visitor ( arik@visitor-tales.com) at 17:27:45 on April 14 2003

Enterprise will be a radical departure from the Star Trek that we know. Check.

Enterprise will revitalize the franchise. Check.

Enterprise season 3 will feature "significan changes". Wanna go 0 for 3?

I don't know why anyone listens to him anymore. All he does when he does these interviews is rattle off some sound-bite that the fans want to hear, then he goes back to his office and does the exact same thing he's been doing.

Has anything he's said in interviews come to fruition?

What's coming

I certainly don't know about anybody else, but I'm excited over these new ordeals Enterprise will have to face. He mentioned the show will become more serialized, which I beleive people around her, at least, said they wanted. And even if you didn't, just be glad he didn't say they were going to make the show "SEXIER". I think they are on the road to making the show better.

How serialized?

It sounds like it could be cool, but I hope they do make it a LITTLE bit more serialized. I don't see how a story like this could be told with the current (or less) level of serialization. I don't think anybody is asking for a B5/DS9's Final Chapter level, but these storylines need to pop up more than once or twice a season.

Who knows...

Well, we were all saying that this show wasn't really scary enough. If they're out in this space for the first time, no one EVER going there before them, then they sould be scared to death. Sure, they're excited, but they're about to face this "race" of aliens that for some reason or another wants to wipe them all out. I'd say that's pretty horrifying. Only time will tell, but hopefully we'll begin to see the workings of this show start dishing themselves out in this coming season. Who knows, Enterprise might not be that bad after all.

Always the optimist!

It looks like they're going to the Delta Quadrant of the future. Just a guess, but if they do, will they run into Janeway?

Honestly, can't they do any better than this?
