Pocket Books editors John Ordover and Keith R. A. DeCandido announced today a new anthology focusing on the characters of the NEW FRONTIER line of STAR TREK novels, due out later this year. NEW FRONTER: NO LIMITS will be a collection of stories centering on the lives of the series's characters before they came together for the NEW FRONTIER books.

Co-developer of the NEW FRONTIER series Peter David will edit the volume, which will feature nearly twenty stories for the series regular and secondary characters. David will pen a story telling of the honeymoon of 'Mackenzie Calhoun' and 'Elizabeth Shelby'. Says DeCandido:

"NO LIMITS will feature a score of new stories spotlighting the individual characters that make up the NF ensemble... The stories (aside from Peter's honeymoon story, obviously) will focus on the characters' lives prior to their joining the NF cast."

The tentative contributor list for the anthology is:

  • Ilsa J. Bick (The Lost Era: Well of Souls)
  • Loren L. Coleman (Mech Warrior novels, first Trek credit)
  • Keith R.A. DeCandido (The Brave and the Bold)
  • Kevin Dilmore (SCE: Foundations)
  • Craig Gibb (Strange New Worlds V)
  • Allyn Gibson (SCE: Ring Around the Sky)
  • Robert Greenberger (TNG: Doors Into Chaos)
  • Glenn Hauman (SCE: Oaths) & Lisa Sullivan (first Trek credit)
  • Robert Jeschonek (Strange New Worlds III, V, and VI)
  • David Mack (SCE: Wildfire)
  • Terri Osborne (DS9: Prophecy and Change)
  • Peg Robinson (Strange New Worlds I and II)
  • Mary Scott-Wiecek (Strange New Worlds III, V, and VI)
  • Josepha Sherman (ST: Vulcan's Heart)
  • Susan Shwartz (ST: Vulcan's Heart)
  • Dayton Ward (ST: In the Name of Honor)
  • Susan Wright (ST: One Small Step)
  • Christina F. York (SCE: Enigma Ship)

These will mark the first solo stories by Sherman, Schwartz and Dilmore. DeCandidio says his story, REVELATIONS, will focus on the character of 'Soleta'. NO LIMITS is scheduled for an October publication.

I bought this series WAY back when it started as novelas and it continued to kick my ass regularly. Its just so out there and Mackenzie Calhoun is one of the most interesting non-TV&Film cannon characters out there. I kinda stopped buying other Trek novels, but I've been buying this since book 1 and I love PD as a writter so i'm not gonna quit now.

write book 13, dangit!

...will this erase the sheer idiocy that was the Excalibur's battle with a Greek Galleon from the last novel?

This is a great announcement and all - I love the New Frontier series, especially the Captains' Table "Once Burned" - but I'm rather curious as to when Peter David is going to go back and write book 13. At the end of book 12 "Being Human", we were left with a bit of a cliffhanger with helmsman Mark McHenry dead, security officer Zak Kebron undergoing some kind of weird change, and the whole of the New Frontier universe in a bit of a flux. I really hope that Peter David and Pocket Books get on the ball in this regard.

As it is, with the New Frontier series on hold and the DS9 relaunch not really doing that much for me, I'm generally in more anticipation of the next Star Wars The New Jedi Order book to come out. Then again, I suppose the waning interest in the books is just a reflection of the waning interest in the franchise as a whole.
