The Texas effort to rename the portion of Interstate 10 running through the city of El Paso after STAR TREK creator
Gene Roddenberry has hit a minor snag this week, according to the
El Paso Times. Roddenberry, who was born in the city, spent much of his childhood in Los Angeles, and after the measure was nearing a vote in the state legislature, opposition to the move has surfaced.
Writing to legislators, Clint, TX resident Henry Garcia claims that Roddenberry was an "anti-Christian" and thus undeserving of the honor.
"I don't know what kind of staffs you folks in the legislature have, but I can tell you that if this gets passed, it will create the biggest stir since Chagra had the judge killed," Garcia said. "I strongly suggest that you pull that bill from the state legislature or be the laughingstock of the nation."
Meanwhile, an El Paso council member had voiced concern over whether Roddenberry contributed to the city in such a way that he should have I-10 named for him. Representative Larry Medina says the TREK creator "never did give a second thought to our great city."
Border Chairwoman Norma Chávez, D-El Paso, says the bill is no longer on the fast track.
"It's created a lot of interest, but some opposition is starting to hit from El Paso."
The El Paso city council is set to discuss the debate this Thursday. Terri Donawell, the El Paso resident who started GRMHpetition.org, says Roddenberry's religion shouldn't matter.
"I think it is a good way to tribute El Paso's most famous native son -- others have the same tribute in this city that did not even come from here. And if the tribute also brings in tourism, that's great."
