Patrick Stewart Reiterates: 'Picard' and NEXT GEN Unlikely to Return

PROMENADE

Dept: Star Trek: Nemesis
Since the disappointing box office performance of STAR TREK NEMESIS last December (the film grossed only $43 million domestically), speculation has been swirling about the future of the film franchise. Patrick Stewart has publicly expressed several times that he feels it is unlikely that the STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION crew will be glimpsed again on the big screen.

Today while promoting his newest big screen adventure, X2: X-MEN UNITED, at the film's junket in New York City, Stewart reiterated that he doesn't think 'Jean-Luc Picard' will be a part of his future.

"I don’t think so. I think the NEXT GENERATION is over with," he said according to Cinema Confidential. "I’ve probably said goodbye to 'Picard' forever now."

Cinecon promises more from Stewart later in the day. You can reach the original story here. Thanks to 'Thomas Clau' for the news.

He'd be saying totally different things if Nemesis had done well, personally I thought he would have kept his mouth shut until the DVD had come out (the DVD will make more money than the theatrical release) but it must be that Paramount have already cut their losses and decided they are not forking out 20 million dollars for Stewart again when the Trek films are already on a tight budget.

Lets imagine Nemesis made $100 Million dollars for a moment. Before the films theatrical release Stewart was constantly saying how he felt the film was great and that he really enjoyed being back as well as how the cast benefitted from a longer break than 2 years. Then Nemesis performs poorly and only a few days later he was saying that they will probably not return (at the UK premiere)

Paramount have pulled the plug on Stewart and now hes obviously changed his tune.

--

On a lighter note regarding Nemesis, the DVD will save this picture from being a total bomb for Paramount. DVDs bring in more revenue for the studio than the actual theatrical release. Take Harry Potter for example. It was released on DVD this week (the 2nd one) and sold 11 million copies worldwide on its FIRST day, totally 108 million dollars - IN ONE DAY. Potter will sell for weeks and probably end up with an extra $400 Million from the USA alone, even more than its cinema release.

Even Maid in Manhattan sold 1.5 Million on its first day last week in the USA alone (30 million dollars in a single day) and other films like The Ring sold 4 million copies on 1 day (I don't have totals for those, but obviously they sold more and more over the subsequent weeks and months)

So Nemesis with its built in fan base will have a very good DVD release, whereas a similar bomb like 'The Core' is in far more trouble, there is no fanbase in place for when that arrives on DVD...

How many will buy Nemesis though? Well Star Trek 6 sold 10 Million copies on VHS in North America alone, so there is your benchmark.

Whew, long post - Bye!

All Good Things again!

As Q put it in the seris finale of TNG...

"Sorry Jun-Luc, but then again all good things must come to an end."

Well he was right. When TNG left TV it left behind a hole in the Star Trek Universe. Then the movies came and some (by some I mean FIRST CONTACT and NEMESIS) were good. But there is a time for everything to end and I think Nemesis was a good ending for TNG. All Good Things MUST come to an end and I think we have seen it for TNG. I think it would the right decision to end it with Nemesis.

I think he has a point. I think that TNG has run its course. I think they would be smart if they did NOT come back with another TNG movie.

I would love to see a Star Trek movie using TNG, DS9, and VOY characters. It would be interesting to see what they would be able to do.

And what if they did a ST movie that did not have any of the main characters from the seris'. What if the did a movie using the Kazon, or the Herogen, or the Jem'Hadar (I never really watched DS9 so I don't know if that was a race or a person or if they died). What about the Klingons. Just a movie with no Star Fleet people.

If he hadnt insisted on making Insurrection a lite movie without an edge and Spiner hadnt had script credit on Nemesis, I think Trek in movie from would be better off.
They get the swelled heads and as contract negotiations have to get into the writing part of it.
Frankly I am tired of both of them whining.

Make another movie, as another post said, with Riker at the Helm, maybe Commander Shelby and a few of the other Trek actors from the other series.
Better yet, make a few miniseries for TV and have another team Other than B and B write it.

TV movies?

Star Trek has always fared better on TV as opposed to the big screen, well not counting the ratings disaster that Enterprise has become. A stand alone or series of TV movies could incorporate TNG, DS9 and Voyager characters and lord knows UPN could use such TV "events" to boost their ratings. Besides, I want someone to finally wrap up all those loose threads from the DS9 finale! :o)

Star Trek: Titan

Star Trek Titan is the logical next film. We have Riker as captain, a character the mainstream audience is familier with, surrounded by new characters and maybe a few old friends too.

Here is what I'm thinking: Captain Riker with a new character for his first officer. O'Brien and Bashir are along as Chief Engineer and doctor, Seven of Nine as his science officer (filling in the void that Data would leave), and two more new characters as helmsman and security chief. Troi would make a cameo as Mrs. RIker, and Picard could have a "pass the torch" cameo.

This provides enough of the familer to make the long time fans happy. The new characters would serve to bring in a new audience. With cheaper actors more money could go into special effects and hiring a big name star as the villian.

With a good script I don't think they could go wrong with this formula. Think Nick Meyer could be talked into writing it??

Do not waste your time even giving any thought to what Patrick Stewart is saying here. He said the same thing after First Contact, and he said the same thing after Insurrection. Spiner is probably saying the same thing.

Yes, it might be true, and it might even be for the best if there is no more TNG, but Stewart's words are hollow, as he will publicly act disinstersted if only to get 1) the public clamoring for more and 2) to improve his negotiating position with Paramount. No Trek actor ever looking forward to the next trek movie gets to negotiate that last $million$ if he appears ready and willing to make the movie at any time.

All Good Things

To me, TNG ended with All Good Things in that shot of the Enterprise-D flying off.

In my opinion, the only TNG film that was really any good (and it pales in comparision to TWOK) is First Contact. Generations was Ok, but the Kirk-killing was handled poorly thus the whole film suffers because of it.

The other two -- Insurrection and Nemesis (even though Nemesis was better than Insurrection) are forgettable. Pedestrian affairs that did not require the big screen with their limited-scope storytelling. So, all in all, the TNG films have had a pretty poor "batting average" in this reviewers humble opinion. I even question the wisdom of even making TNG films. Going in, I knew there was no way they would ever top the best of the TV episodes in a two-hour movie.

Yep...it's time to put TNG to pasture for sure. The jury is still out on Enterprise. I'll give em a chance to get things rolling during this upcoming third season, but if it pulls a Voyager and just flatlines in quality -- then it's "curtains" for Trek.

It was a matter of time before even Patrick Stewart himself acknowledged that TNG's time on the big screen was now over. After the disastrous results of "Nemesis", a studio isn't going to take a big gamble like that once again. It's best that they take their bow with this recent film.

Then again, look at what happened with the James Bond franchise. "License to Kill" wasn't the box office blockbuster, and that franchise sat for six years until the huge success of "Goldeneye". Maybe it's time Star Trek takes a break for a while both on TV and in the movies.
