"Once wasn't enough," exclaims the press release from filmmaker Roger Nygard about the development of a sequel to the often-lambasted 1999 documentary film TREKKIES. The original film, hosted by ST:TNG actress Denise Crosby and distributed by Paramount Classics, documented the stranger side of STAR TREK fandom and many have criticized it for misrepresenting its subjects and the larger community of TREK and sci-fi fans. Now, TREKKIES 2 is seeking to show the kindler, gentler side of being a STAR TREK fanatic, seeking out stories and fans at conventions this summer.

"We had an amazing adventure meeting and interviewing hundreds and hundreds of STAR TREK fans for TREKKIES, but we didn't venture beyond the borders of the United States and Canada," reads the release. "This time, in addition to following up on some of our original profilees and finding a few new ones in the States, we're going to travel to several countries around the world."

The filmmakers say the second film will attempt to directly address the criticisms of its predecessor.

"One thing we would like to do better is present more of the charitable side of TREK fandom, seeing this in action, and observing and hearing more of the stories of how fans donate their time, money, and other efforts to better their communities," they say.

Crosby and her camera crew will be hitting international conventions this summer, beginning next month with Fed Con in Bonn, Germany (May 2-4). Subsequent citites they'll be attending include: Paris (May 9-10), London (May 12), Bellaria, Italy (STICCon XVII May 23-25), Belgrade/Novi Sad, Former Yugoslavia (May 30-31), Sydney/Melbourne, Australia (June 7-9). The documentarists will then follow up with U.S. locations.

Fans are encouraged to submit their own stories and experiences with fandom through the film's new web site Trekkies2.com. In addition, the filmmakers say they wan to hear opinions on the first film, to facilitate with producing "a film that is fun and informative for everybody involved."

Thanks to 'Mads Strømsnes' at Star Trek Norge for the release.

There is no need to make a PC version of Trekkies

I liked Trekkies because it *did* focus on the freak-job aspect of fandom. It was funny that way and made it entertaining. If you can't laugh at yourself, what can you laugh at? my favorite moment was john delance telling this story: "I had this guy walk up to me on the street one time and he asked me 'Are you Q?' I said 'Yeah.' 'Can you bring people back from the dead?' 'Uh... only people I like' 'Cool.' And then he walked away"

still I can see the need for a kinder-gentler version though, because if you think about it the ONLY target market for this flick would be the Trek fanbase, so why piss them off again? This will make back its mini-budget, probably, but I guess it won't be as entertaining as the first one.
