ENTERPRISE actor John Billingsley, who plays the Denobulan 'Doctor Phlox' on the prequel series, will appear at this weekend's Starland Starfest convention in Denver, CO and spoke with the Denver Post this morning about landing his STAR TREK role.

"Very few actors are in a position to pick and choose which auditions they want to go out on," Billingsley explains. "And you never really know if a show is going to be picked up or if it is picked up, whether it is going to be successful."

Billinsley said the details on the Phlox character were scant to begin with, so he didn't quite know what to bring to the audition.

"I thought perhaps on my home planet I was some kind of birdlike creature. So, I squawked upon occasion, in moments of rapture. They cast me, but they never told me whether or not they cast me because of the squawk or in spite of the squawk."

You can read more from Billingsley and SMALLVILLE actor Michael Rosembaum, also appearing this weekend, here.

the weakness of trek aliens

Mr. Bilingsly's comments point up why the Trek "alien of the week" concept is so weak. It seems to me that a REAL alien might look or act like a bird, or otherwise have mannerisms, customs and/or physiology that make interactions with humans very awkward. But all the aliens we see on Trek are very humanlike in nearly every respect. It makes it increasingy hard to "suspend disbelief."
