Change Unchained: New Aliens, New Weapons, New Hairdos, New Mission a TREK "First" Berman Tells TVG

PROMENADE

The news about ENTERPRISE's radical new direction for season three is going mainstream in the May 10th issue of TV Guide (on stands Monday, May 5th), according to a press release from the magazine. Executive producer Rick Berman will reveal all new details about the prequel series' finale "The Expanse" and what it means for the third season of the struggling UPN show that TV Guide recently lambasted for lack of imagination (story).

In the season finale, "a mysterious probe from space will blast a swath of destruction across North and Central America, causing epic explosions and annihilating everything between Florida and Venezuela," according to the article. "As viewers will learn, this is a preemptive strike by an alien race known as the Xindi (that’s Zin-dee), who have obtained knowledge that Earth will destroy their home world 400 years in the future. The hour ends on a chilling threat of more devastation to come, but this is no mere summer cliff-hanger. In fact, it marks a whole new direction for the series."

Rick Berman says the new direction will be a first for the STAR TREK franchise.

"What we are about to do is a first for STAR TREK,” Berman tells TVG. “In the past, our captains have had the general mission to explore outer space and, in the case of Voyager, a mission to find a way back home. But there has never been a Trek series built around a specific mission and specific stakes-in this case, the very future of mankind.”

He goes on to say that the new Xindi threat will be the greatest that Captain Archer's Earth will yet have faced.

"We find out that the Xindi space probe was merely a test and that they are creating an even more powerful weapon,” Berman says. “It’s up to Captain Archer to go there and stop them from destroying us altogether.”

TV Guide also reveals new details about the repercussions of the finale for next season, writing that the Enterprise NX-01 will be "retrofitted for war" and that we'll get our first glimpse at the use of photon torpedos in Starfleet's history. Furthermore, the dangerous Delphic Expanse, likened to the Bermuda Triangle, causes those who enter to "become anatomically inverted (skin on the inside, organs on the outside)." Furthermore, even Jolene Blalock's 'T'Pol', as a result of resigning from the Vulcan High Command, "will sport a new cat suit and hairdo next season."

All the grisly details will be on newsstands May 5th.

What happened to the"Birth of the Federation?" What's happen

After reading Mr.Berman's comments...I'm confused...

Here are a few points to ponder....

What happened to the birth of the Federation?

How do we get "there" from "here"? (ie: this new direction)

If this new race is resposible for these destructive events, how come we have never heard of them in the four"sequel" series that follow?

Would it not have made far greater sense to attach responsibility for these events to the Borg or the Romulans, or some existing race in the Trek universe?
(They could be portrayed as a "faceless enemy", if needed)

If The NX-01 in crew head off to some hireto unknown region of space to fight some hireto unknown "ultimate enemy", how can they meet, greet and interact with the future races of the federation?

After wreaking havoc on Earth, this race will feel the wrath of ONE STARSHIP?

This has the potential to be the greatest continuity disaster in the franchise's history if not handled properly.....

replies are welcome.....

I don't suppose there's any chance Archer will pull a Sisko and be reassigned as head of Homeland Security—for a year or two.

But seriously, Rick Berman must go. He just keeps piling on resentment, one thing is for sure, he won't be forgotten, he'll be remembered as the man who killed Star Trek.

In the way that we get a new starship captain with each series, Paramount should change producers with every new series as well.

I really hate Rick Berman and his addled vision of Star Trek.

Thats what the gif says in this thread BTW.
Anyway, I think Season 3 looks very promsing and looks to be the shot in the arm that enterprise really needs. It would be good to see enterprise assuming a warship role, i was getting quite turned off by the ship and its crew being a pussycat's so far.
I am with the poster down there....atleast the evil ones have realized that enterprise sucks so far with a lame premise and to top it off poor execution. Atleast we should give them credit for trying to fix things and make a last ditch attempt to save enterprise cancellation and resulting star trek demise.
If they execute S3 as promising it sounds with the new premise..hey they might even win back a disgruntled, hard-core trekkie like me :)

I 'really don't care what other quasi-fans are talking about. I think Enterprise is a great improvement from Voyager. I will be waiting till this episode comes out on DVD here in The Netherlands.

What does he mean by this.....

"become anatomically inverted (skin on the inside, organs on the outside)."

Does that mean if we enter the area of space, we "invert" or something? So, does that mean everybody will have to wear space suits?

Maybe it's because it's late or becauce I've had to much to drink.... but could somebody please fill me in?

hmmm....a powerful race with powerful weapons perform a PRE-EMPITVE strike on Earth for what we were GOING to do...hmmm...where could that idea have come from?

hmmm...and the pre-emptive people are the BAD GUYS....

Subtle...very subtle.

I'm sure that the political overtones will be as subtle next season as T'Pol's new suit.

I've read a lot of arrogant posts by arrogant Trekkers who think think that "the B&B 'conspiracy' to destroy Trek" and ridiculous solutions to fix the series by just getting rid of it.

At least Berman and Braga are trying. I certainly think that they've made mistakes in the past, and I'm sure they realize those mistakes, but at least they're trying to make things right. They've written and produced some of the best episodes and movies of TREK, and its obvious that they're trying to make things right.

Star Trek won't get better if it's "fans" are the ones bashing the series. Constructive criticism is much better than arrogance.

but I think I have to on this one.

Does anyone else think that -- whenever ENT ends, whether that be next year or after a full 7 years -- that we are going to be very, very cheated?

Let me put it this way: Does anyone remember Bobby Ewing from Dallas?

Yes, I'm saying that, based on TBTB's comments given to us by Steve, the series finale of ENT will basically have us conclude that the Temporal Cold War ends with NONE of the events we are watching having happened!!!

That's why we've never heard of this attack on Earth before. That's why we've never heard of the "Enterprise NX-01" before. That's why we've never heard of a Starfleet Captain being put on trial by the Klingons before Kirk was in Star Trek VI.

BECAUSE NONE OF IT EVER HAPPENED!!!

The Temporal Cold War -- and ENT -- is B&B's way of messing with ST fans' minds for years to come. At best, we are watching an alternate-universe ST. (Not the Mirror universe, obviously, although that would be more fun, don't you think?) But I believe it will be that the Temporal Cold War is all about the "good guys" fixing all the crud that Archer & Co. are doing because the NX-01 was never built, was never on this mission, these people didn't exist.

It's the only thing that makes sense -- and once I accept that, ENT can be fun to watch just to see how royally screwed up B&B are making things.

Peace!

Evidentally the concept of a prequel totally eludes these guys. There were enough dots already made from previous Trek. It would have been interesting to see someone with creative talent connect those. Instead they have re-write history, introduce aliens and technology way to soon, and complain that nobody understands their efforts.

You know it's a good thing they never titled Enterprise with "Star Trek". I'm now taking that to mean it really is not part of the Star Trek legacy. Which means all of this can be ignored and there is no reason to watch it.

Please, please, please let this final stupid effort put the last nail in the coffin!!

If B&B would have just called the enemy "the Romulans," then this idea might have had some legs. Instead, it's just another "forehead alien of the week" that must be shoehorned into the ever-over-crowded Trek universe.

Even the Delphic Expanse phenom isn't new. In the novel version of STTMP, the transporter accident early in the story has organs materializing outside of the skin.

B&B are so pathetic!

That is the stupidest thing I ever heard of. No, seriously, this is the most ridiculous idea I've ever heard for a purported serious science fiction television show. It eclipses just about every other hokey treknobable they came up with for Voyager.

a mysterious probe from space will blast a swath of destruction across North and Central America, causing epic explosions and annihilating everything between Florida and Venezuela

If this is meant to be inspired by 9/11, then I at least hope the show uses it to comment on how life in the U.S. has changed. Star Trek was always at its best when it was used to talk about present day events. But I doubt B&B pay attention to what goes on in the world.

this is a preemptive strike by an alien race known as the Xindi (that’s Zin-dee), who have obtained knowledge that Earth will destroy their home world 400 years in the future.

This would be a perfect opportunity to comment on the recent Iraq war and the idea that preemptive strikes are justified. Again, I doubt B&B ever think of such issues.

What we are about to do is a first for STAR TREK. There has never been a Trek series built around a specific mission and specific stakes-in this case, the very future of mankind.

Apparently Berman never watched DS9.

We find out that the Xindi... are creating an even more powerful weapon. It’s up to Captain Archer to go there and stop them from destroying us altogether.

How many times has Star Trek showed the Earth being threatened by someone with an all-powerful weapon? It's a tired cliche in a franchise that too often pats itself on the back for having a hopeful view of the future.

Continuity Again

Give me a break. With an attack this big on Earth, why have we not every heard of this enemy or the attack in all the years of Star Trek. It would seem that this would be as big as a World War or Eugenics War.

I don't mind breaking small continuity areas for dramatic purposes, but give me a break. This is not Star Trek, and does not take place in the Star Trek Universe.

Star Trek unfortunately is over and has been since DS9 went off the air.

I have another idea for a change. In a parallel universe, where Archer,Kirk,Picard,Janeway and Sisko really exist, they invent a transspacedimensional viewer where they can see what junk Berman and Braga are putting on TV, practically defecating on the 'Star Trek' concept.

Unable to bear this torture any more, they make a dimensional leap and whisk Berman and Braga back to their universe and never return them.

The franchise finds people to infuse some creativity back into its dead veins.

A CGI alien race would certainly be interesting, and bring a twist into it - the Xindi could be the race from 'Silent Enemy' perhaps?

Stargate SG-1 did a CGI alien 'Asguard' recently and it was very lifelike, I suggest giving their FX guys a call.

No More Cat Suits Please!

"Jolene Blalock's T'Pol... 'will sport a new cat suit and hairdo next season.'"

Wow. Just like 7 of 9 did so many different times. Change of cat suits. Wow. Big and original changes-- NOT!. Can't she wear more normal clothing. I feel degraded when she is on screen and someone sees me watching ENT with her in it. They always ask me "Why does she have to wear something like that?" In VGR it was explained that 7 of 9 had to wear the bio garment for whatever reasons. But why does T'Pol wear basically the same thing as 7 of 9 for no real reason?

At any rate, I find Hoshi more attractive. More my type. Smart, laid back, witty, and so forth.

B&B please stop with the cat suits.

Well that's an original idea. Let's have Star Trek go to war so we can up ratings and look like a George Lucas feature... again. Didn't one war on DS9 satisfy the bloodlust of fans and Berman alike? Photons this early when they should be using nukes. Plus now we get mulitple catsuits ala Seven of Nine inch heals. The only high point I can think of is the attack on Earth. It's what the Breen should have done in the Dominion War, instead of damaging buildings in San Francisco (I mean come on. The Breen did less damage then the 1989 quake to the city).

Okay, so rather than transforming Enterprise into a real "sci-fi" show, showing awe and wonder, and the forming of the Federation, their wonderful transformation is to turn it into Combat in Space.

And, in all the history of Star Trek, we have never heard of these aliens or their destruction of a big part of Earth.

This is just BS! The franchise really needs a new leader.

It appears that the powers that be have been reading what many of you have been posting here, even to the point of a new catsuit and hairstyle for T'Pol! I imagine the hair will be a little longer, less "boyish," and I'm sure that will please a lot of people here.

Haven't seen "Cogenitor" yet (it was pre-empted by baskeball) but the buzz here and elsewhere would seem to indicate it's worth the viewer's time. Even the ratings seem to be nosing upward.

The overall tone and quality of the past several episodes seem to be moving in the right direction. Very encouraging.
