Today's Tribblets, May 02

PROMENADE

So there were no takers for Wednesday's Van Halen Riff of the Day! I know it was a crappy recording, and probably an even crappier rendition, and a pretty short little bite, but c'mon, surely there was a Van Halen fan out there who could recognize the chorus riff to "So This Is Love?" off FAIR WARNING?

Oh well, no matter. Today I'm running the Tribblets column early and here's another riff attempt that I think is more recognizeable and the recording came out better. Name the song!

Today's Tribblets:

  • SyFy Portal reports a rumor that the ENTERPRISE opening title sequence will be revamped at the beginning of next season.

  • No Region 2 ENTERPRISE DVDs after all, according to Paramount Home Entertainment Netherlands.

  • LCARSCom.Net is giving away four STAR TREK NEMESIS action figures and a NEMESIS DVD.

  • StarTrek.com is offering several prizes in its "Journey to THE EXPANSE" Sweepstakes, based on trivia questions from the last four new episodes of ENTERPRISE this season.

  • StarTrek.com reports on the success of William Shatner's recent Hollywood Charity Horse Show.

  • J.G. Hertzler will sign copies of his books THE LEFT HAND OF DESTINY May 10th @ Noon at the Borders Books in Oxnard, CA at 241 W. Esplande Drive.

  • George Takei ('Sulu') will speak at several Asian Pacific American Heritage Month functions in Germany in May.

Will a theme song change help?

Yes, because a theme song change is sure to improve the writing on the show. C'mon people, this program has more problems than a bad tune.

It does not sound like it will fit the new direction of the series. I think it was fine for the mood and tone of 1 and 2, but it is a good time for a change. Maybe an instrumental/orchestrated, by that I mean non lyric version of the current theme. But speed up and more tense. To maintain a good thematic continuity.

I'll try not to make this another, boring "The Theme Song Sucks" rant, but let me just address something... STAR TREK hasn't had a decent opening theme since TNG, and they lifted that from THE MOTION PICTURE. The original '60s intro is a dyed-in-the-wool, classic; the TNG intro, while good, was redundant and now lessens the power and majesty of the original film ('cause now we've heard it a million times in syndication!); I STILL can't hum you two bars from the DS9 theme (a total snoozer); VOYAGER at least had Jerry Goldsmith working on it, but it seemed more melancholy than bombastic; and of course, the Diane Warren song is the all-time worst TREK theme EVER (why didn't they sing that the other night when she guest-judged "American Idol?"). In order to win back some fans and let them know you mean business about getting STAR TREK back off the ground, Berman (if he had any brains--I know, tall order) would give a composer carte blanche to come up with the biggest, baddest, balls-to-the-wall opening fanfare ever created for a sci-fi series. That's where you're going to make it or break it--if Episode 1 of Season 3 has another lame intro, I may not even watch past the credits. If the new theme (please, no more lyrics) is an ass-kicker, I'll at least watch until the first commercial. Thank you and good day!

Isn't this like the third or fourth time something has come out of the Paramount Netherlands site that ended up not being true? I think they need to get a handle on what they're doing over there.
