Former TNG Producer Wins Rights to Bring Back Roddenberry's QUESTOR

In an exclusive interview for the official STAR TREK web site, former ST:TNG producer Herbert Wright has announced that he has obtained the rights to develop a new series based on Gene Roddenberry's 1974 TV movie THE QUESTOR TAPES.

Wright and his partners announced their plans to bring back QUESTOR at the recent Grand Slam convention in Pasadena, California, and Roddenberry's son Eugene Roddenberry, Jr. is currently promoting the project on Roddenberry.com.

"Herb worked on NEXT GENERATION, and I knew his name and heard good things," the younger Roddenberry said. "I felt he'd do the property justice, and do the fans justice."

Originally produced by Universal Studios and shown on NBC in 1974, THE QUESTOR TAPES was a pilot for a proposed series called QUESTOR about a contemporary android. Questor, placed on Earth by aliens, was meant to be indistinguishable from humans yet designed to help continue humanity's evolution.

"A lot of what [Roddenberry] wanted to do originally for Questor, he transposed for Data - the whole 'Pinocchio' angle, the walking encyclopedia not that aware of the human condition," Wright said. "Even though [Questor] will certainly share traits with Data - his interests in humanity, his obviously tremendous intelligence - Questor will carry a deep spiritual wisdom. Think 'Data meets the Dalai Lama.'"

No distribution rights have been established yet, though the pilot could go into production as early as fall 2003. Wright is seeking any fans who may have rare QUESTOR script or publicity materials to write to questor@roddenberry.com.

It's really sad

You know, it's really sad that no studio could be bothered to produce any of Gene's series' while he was alive, besides STAR TREK. Now the studios milk his name and memory for all its worth. It's sickening.

Besides, what's the point? Roddenberry combined Xon and Questor to create Data. We got the best of both characters in one, so what's the point? Besides cashing in on the memory of a man who can no longer share the wealth, that is.

Magna One

The series I want to see is the seldom-mentioned Roddenberry concept MAGNA ONE. This was to be set in an underwater environment. I remember reading old Starlog articles on this during the 70's just prior to the development of Star Trek: Phase II. Roddenberry said in one interview he wanted Paul McCartney to do the MAGNA ONE theme song. I don't know much else about it.

But the idea of it taking place in "inner space" is an appealing one to me at least...

Questor is boring and we've seen it all with Data.

I for one remember Questor and had hoped it would become a series in the 70's. I hope it does the original justice. It was very reflective and not just a super robot show.

Splitting things up... again.

More power to Star Trek instead, please. Thank you. An already established universe with nearly 700 episodes is valuable, and has no match in history. So instead of confusing people with another Roddenerry product, why not join forces under one roof, and make sure Star Trek will never die.

No more sects! It just takes away more audience from Star Trek.
