TVG Reveals More About S3: Commandos, Xindi Insectoids, Archer+ (SPOILERS)

PROMENADE

The May 10th issue of TV Guide is on newsstands now with an exclusive preview of the ENTERPRISE season finale, "The Expanse," which will set events into motion meant to kick start the "floundering" (as writer Michael Logan calls it) series for its third season.

In addition to quotations from producers Rick Berman and Brannon Braga (see story), the article quotes star Scott Bakula ('Jonathan Archer') as excited for the changes. "In a way, this feels like a second chance," Bakula told TVG, saying that while he doesn't think the first two seasons have shown a "bumbling" crew, the added urgency of the new Xindi alien threat will help encourage good storytelling.

Berman and Braga reveal that Bakula's Archer will become a more confident commander, shedding some of his tenderfoot qualities revealed in the first two seasons. Braga also says that the new Xindi--who want to destroy Earth before humans can destroy them in a 400-year distant future--will be unlike any alien foe seen in TREK before, and Berman says some components of the beings on screen will be created with computer imagery. Braga says we will see not only Xindi humanoids, but insectoids and other species, all with their own technology.

"It's as if the evolution of Earth had been different and dinosaurs and amphibians and insects had developed into sentient beings right along with humans," Braga says.

In addition to changes for T'Pol's cat suit and hairdo and Trip's loss of a relative in the first Xindi attack, Logan reveals that new, recurring, "commandos" will join the ship to add extra security. The magazine says the roles will be cast "with star quality in mind," though no further details on the number of characters is revealed.

Where do they get these frekn ideas??

This new idea for Enterprise sounds like absolute crap. If I wanted to watch humans have a war with insects, I'd watch Starship Troopers. When the hell are B&B finally going to hit the road and hand over the reigns to someone who can write remotely more intriguing stories. There are several aliens already established that they could use in new stories. I mean, who would love to see a few more Romulan episodes, or Klingon, Andorian, even Suliban episodes. I guess they would have to think to hard to fit it into the timeline just right. Hopefully it won't suck too terribly.

Why would anyone have faith in this...?

I've said it before and I'll say it again... as long as Berman and Braga have ANYTHING to do with the writing of stories or scripts, then TREK is done for. They CAN'T WRITE, people. They have no talent, wit or any real grasp of solid drama and science-fiction in general. As long as they keep rehashing their own tired plotlines, we'll be tearing our hair our for at least another year. A "new, alien threat???" Yaaaawn. You mean, like the Borg and the Jem'Hadar? New crewmembers thrown together with Starfleet? Like the Maqui in VOYAGER? How many times are they going to do this until we all rally and have them replaced...?

B & B are treading on very thin ice. Ultimately I hope they pull it off (because there is very little genre tv worth watching these days). But it sounds like they are desperately trying to pull in a larger audience & if this slumps into a chicks & guns fest they will potentially lose their core viewers.
At the end of the day I dont think the series will digress into anything like that. They will probably deal with this war/conflict in a *fairly* sensible manner. But I think they wont capitalise on the social commentary. Which is always a shame.
Just dont dumb Trek down, thats all I ask.

I Like to look at the positive

I know there are many who dislike the direction of the Star Trek franchise. I can agree some of the story lines have been less than spectacular. But overall I still enjoy the story of the possible future. Many positive things may happen and at a time where there is nothing but war in the now, I still enjoy the escapism Enterprise can provide.

I like the series and I have liked them all. When I see what else is offered, I am thankful there is still a Star Trek series because the other choices are pitiful. (With the exception of Stargate) And when there was something of equal quality, it was cancelled. (Such as Farscape)

Perhaps TPTB will try to make changes and make them for the better. Only time will tell.

I will keep watching for as long as it is on the air. For better, for worse, for the positive...

Atleast they are trying

Instead of bashing them for trying to jump-start the series I will reserve my judgement until I see the end product in season 3. I mean sure, we have heard and seen all of this before somewhere but hey..every sci-fi series out there pretty much borrows sci-fi either written before in books, other shows or seen in movies. They all improve upon it to give the plot a new twist and a different facelift.
B&B I guess can see the writing on the wall, they better wake up and smell the coffee and do a damn good job or their baby wont be floating for very much long. Its do or die for them

Perfect!

They're moving the borders around Star Trek to provide more room for new stories. They're listening to those who complained about T'Pols catsuit. The crew will run into more dangers that will affect them personally. The captain will become more confident in ruling. Aliens won't all be humanoids with funny foreheads. It won't just be "new aliens of the week" adventures.

This is everything you fans have wished for. I'm not ironic. It's these kind of things I've seen all over the Internet.

With about 30 sci-fi series in production over the last 15 years, you will surely be able to find something that reminds you of other series, and you can always hack something down when you want to. But they really just fulfill your wishes.

If our expectations are fair considering the amount of sci-fi material available, we won't blame them when Enterprise uses elements that can be found elsewhere.

Apparently this person saw the Tuesday airing of ENT in Canada. This just leaves a sour taste in my mouth. One wonders if anybody will be left to watch the show after this.

Funny stuff!

This is entertaining! They don't need to actually produce any of the episodes: it's fun just laughing at what ideas they steal from other sci-fi shows, incorporate into their own, and call it bold new Star Trek. I've long ago stopped being embarassed by what they're doing, so now I'll just sit back and enjoy the only real entertainment of current Star Trek: behind the scenes stupidity.

So...

...Now they're "borrowing" from (by my count) Starship Troopers, Farscape, and SG-1. Well, when you gotta steal, take from the best.

Just freaking tell good stories. We don't need lame action stunts, we don't need tighter catsuits. No need to invent new aliens, "Dead Stop" didn't need new aliens and was a great ep. If you need aliens there are plenty of them from TOS and TNG that don't compromise continuity.

They have the same answer for every problem: sexier, with more explosions.

These guys just don't want to think or operate under any constraints. How lazy can you be...

Here come the "RED SHIRTS" ???

Hmmm...could this be the beginning of an actual death toll on Enterprise NX-01 ??? Maybe these commandos will be the equivelent of TOS red shirts...maybe some will get anatomically inverted. lol Or do you think they are going to turn these "elite force" commandos into a hard core bunch of colonial marines via. Aliens??? ;-) Things could get interesting.

Personally, I'd like to see an episode where the special commandos try to gain control of the ship, or maybe have a secret mission that Archer doesn't know about...like those Navy Seals did in Abyss ala the Nuclear Bomb. lol

I'll keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best.
