This one just couldn't be passed up as a Tribblet, however, you might say some little guys are intimately involved. The
Lexington Herald-Leader reports that 'Captain Kirk',
William Shatner, is being sued by his ex-wife Marcy Lafferty over the rights to properly-prepared horse semen.
The bone of contention concerns the couple's 1995 divorce agreement, which grants Lafferty breeding rights over Shatner's stallion Great Day's Came the Son. Under the settlement, Shatner's ex-wife is entitled to one "breeding privilege" per year and, accordingly, to the horse's semen in "fresh cooled format." Earlier this year, however, Shatner opted to provide the semen in frozen form, a choice Laffery's suit claims is "unacceptable" and diminishes the economic viability of her breeding rights.
Horse breeding is big business for Shatner, who began the trade with offspring from his stallion Sultan's Great Day, which the suit claims fetched as much as $165,000. Lafferty also alleges that the frozen semen deprived her the right to breed one her own mares with Sultan's Great Day.
Shatner faced suit in the early Nineties regarding stallion breeding rights, when an associate claimed that the captain violated an agreement to grant the rights. A Kentucky court sided with the 'Big Giant Head' in that case, prompting a purely Shatnerian quote from the actor:
"In this instance there was a difference of opinion as to what was true ... and the judge ruled that perhaps my apprehension of reality was the correct one."
