Jonathan Frakes the New 'Number One' to Helm Warners' SUPERMAN?

According to Superhero Hype (via ComingSoon.net), STAR TREK's number one commander (and newest captain) may be in line to direct one of the biggest new comic book revivals around: SUPERMAN. An insider writing to the site and claiming to be a part of the current THUNDERBIRDS production at Pinewood Studios in London told the site that helmer Jonathan Frakes has been meeting with Warner Brothers executives about taking on the man of steel's next big screen adventure.

"These have taken place at Frakes office at Pinewood," the source wrote. "The plan being that Frakes would move on to SUPERMAN as soon as [the] THUNDERBIRDS shoot has wrapped. From what I can gather Warners wants to film a large majority of their SUPERMAN movie here at Pinewood as well as Canada."

Frakes, who got his big screen directorial debut with the second NEXT GENERATION feature, STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT, in 1996, also helmed STAR TREK: INSURRECTION in 1998 and Paramount's kid-oriented CLOCKSTOPPERS (2002). THUNDERBIRDS is a live-action adaption of the British adventure series of the same name being produced by Universal (story). Frakes gained his initital directorial experience with several episodes of THE NEXT GENERATION, such as "The Offspring," "The Chase," "Attached," "The Drumhead" and "Cause and Effect" and is often credited with opening the door for other TREK actors to move behind the camera. Frakes has since directed episodes of VOYAGER, DEEP SPACE NINE, ROSWELL and the pilot for UPN's new THE TWILIGHT ZONE.

Frakes is the fourth director to become attached to the new SUPERMAN project. Tim Burton and McG both had a go before RUSH HOUR helmer Brett Ratner seemed to be in the center seat for some time. Ratner left the project earlier this year.

Yet Another Superman Rumor

Sheesh, there've been more rumors about the new Superman movie than there's been about Jimmy Hoffa's whereabouts. I'm not buying anything until I see an official WB announcement.

What about the Smallville creators

The Smallville creator seem very respectful of the groundwork layed in the superman movies. They have a very human twist on this Superman story. The actors aren't bad either. And most of them would be quite suited for the role on the big screen in a few more years. Or if they could make them look older with makeup. The creators of the show seem very well versed in the Superman mythos.

Obviously I like Frakes a lot, because of his Star Trek affiliation. And I'm sure he'd do a good job with Superman if he were to get the gig. However, is he a fan of Superman and all??? Personally, I think whoever ends up directing the new Superman movie, should be a fan somewhat...and have above average knowledge about the Superman mythos. I think that is very reasonable to ask for. But hopefully Frakes is a Supes fan, and hopefully he will land the gig.

His Clock Stoppers project made me think of the FLASH in a new light, in retrospect to the Flash's speed.

Director who can direct

Personally, I am glad that Frake is beening considered. The past directors that were attached to the project were way wrong for this movie. Frakes isn't the best choice but a better choice. I would hate to see a Superman film starring Nic. Cage. Not to mention a dark gothic Superman with villianous skinny clowns and clay-animation monsters. Believe me Burton can't help but have freaky crap in a comic strip story.

Frakes would be a good boy and do what Jon Peters wants

not to disrespect Frakes, I think he's a very competent director (his flicks and episodes look rather nice, esp. FC) but so far those past 3 directors seemed to have enough clout to put thier own spin on the projects. (Burton brough in his own writters and wanted Nic Cage, McG wanted to do it in a Charlies Angels style and Ratner's take was all fucked up with a flying alien Lex Luthor) Kevin Smith mentioned on his "Evening With" disc that what Jon Peters really wanted for Superman was that A) he doesn't wear the costume B) he doesn't fly and C) he has to fight a big fuckin spider in the 3rd act. I think if Peters tells Frakes to do that, he will for sure. But, I think it'll look nice anyway...

Now that is a surprise! I would hope that should Jonathan Frakes be chosen to direct the next Superman film, that he carries the same respect for the character that Richard Donner did. :)

I hope he can get this, I'll cross my fingers for him! - He is certainly capable as shown in First Contact where he was praised by most critics.
