Writer Mike Sussman Answers Fans, Says S3 Will Focus on "High Concepts"

PROMENADE

ENTERPRISE writer Mike Sussman has been busy this season with partner Phyllis Strong penning episodes like "Dead Stop," "Future Tense," "Regeneration," and this week's "Bounty." The former VOYAGER scribe recently took fan questions for a Q&A over at TrekToday and covered a range of topics in the resulting interview. Sussman says the season finale will energize the show going into season three.

"I think Rick [Berman] and Brannon [Braga] have been very forthcoming about the changes they're planning for next season," he said when asked about acknowledgement of fan complaints. "Wait until you see 'The Expanse'. They've thrown the ball over the metaphorical fence, and next season, the writers are going to have go after it. The script was a page-turner... in some ways, it's almost a new pilot. I can't wait to see the finished episode."

He says next season may have more of a focus on science fiction-themed stories.

"I'm told season three will have more of an emphasis on weird, high-concept, science fiction ideas," Sussman told another fan.

One question asked about the season two episode "Future Tense," involving the Tholians, and Sussman revealed that the original idea was a full sequel to the classic episode "The Tholian Web."

"We'd learn that after the Defiant disappeared into the 'spatial interphase', it emerged in the 22nd Century," he says, referring to the TOS story. "Archer would eventually discover that the Tholians from his era had somehow weakened the fabric of space/time, hoping to trap a ship from the future. The Tholians would then try to reverse engineer the ship and get all sorts of cool futuristic technology. And of course it would fall upon Archer to retrieve the Defiant and destroy it to prevent this from happening."

"As much as I would've loved to see Archer and the gang wandering the decks of a Constitution Class starship (and possibly running into a ghostly James Kirk in his silver bee-keeper suit), the story had some problems, not the least of which would be the expense of recreating the Defiant. And since DS9 pretty much did the same thing in 'Trials and Tribble-ations' (it probably wouldn't have been as cool as I thought at the time."

They should have made it. Sound so cool. Hint...something like this shouldn't be missed in do or die season 3

I would have loved to see a sequel to, "The Tholian Web," that would have rocked! They could even use it with the whole Temporal Cold War story-arc. It is a real shame that B&B threw this idea, an excellent idea, out the window and opted for episodes like, "Regeneration," which, while good, would have been better replaced with an episode like a Tholian Web Sequel. Maybe we should all send letters to the writers asking them to re-think doing this story.

Even if they went with the Defiant, people would be screaching to high heavens that this would violate continuity, polute the timeline, etc.

Weird science? You mean the technobabble we've been fed for the past nine years doesn't qualify as "weird science?" Andre Bormanis must be working overtime to try to explain this BS science in the scripts for next season.

The Tholians and weird science

That sequel idea would have rocked. Future tense was great and all but but the missing Defiant story would have been awesome. But continuity buffs would have indeed complained. If the Defiant was recovered in the past why didn't Kirk and crew know where and when the Defiant was disappearing to in The Tholian Web episode. But if done well it would have kicked.

I am curious about the weird science that Enterprise will be getting into for Season 3. I love the weird sci-fi from the 60's. The Twilight Zone, The outer Limits, Star Trek TOS had the best bizarre concepts in stories. I hope to see some of this in Season 3.

Man, are they out of touch...

...That's EXACTLY the sort of episode that would keep fans coming back for more! That Defiant story was one of the best ideas I ever heard for any TREK episode, and what happens? They don't run with it. Aargh! Of course, if they HAD produced it, it probably would have been bogged-down with weak incidental music, zombie-like performances and poor dialogue--from what I can gather, all hallmarks of any given ENTERPRISE episode...

it WOULD have been cool. And I don't understand why it would be so expensive to recreate the Defiant... don't they still have the sets in storage from "Trials and Trib."?

about the Defiant thing. I've read everything from two comic books to an e-book sequel on the fate of the Defiant, and I've always wanted to see a canon sequel somewhere. It would've been a cool opportunity for them to compare technology and say how advanced the ship is compared to NX-01. Well if not season three then maybe someday.
