The 29th Annual Saturn Awards were held last night in Hollywood and despite ten nominations, the STAR TREK franchise only nabbed one honor on the night. According to Sci-Fi Wire, old age proved no deterrent for STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION, which won for best television DVD release. ST:TNG is no stranger to the Saturns, taking home the best genre television series award in 1989 and 1991.

ENTERPRISE had received four nominations, including best network television series, which went to ABC's ALIAS. Scott Bakula ('Jonathan Archer') and THE DEAD ZONE's Anthony Michael Hall lost in the best actor category to ANGEL's David Boreanez, while the departing BUFFY's Alyson Hannigan took the best supporting actress honor in a category that included last year's winner, Jolene Blalock ('T'Pol') (story). Both Jeri Ryan ('Seven of Nine') and Kate Mulgrew ('Kathryn Janeway') have taken home acting honors at the Saturns, but there was no joy for Connor Trinneer ('Trip Tucker') in the best supporting actor category, which was awarded to Victor Garber of ALIAS.

In the world of genre features, STAR TREK NEMESIS failed to woo a Saturn in either best science-fiction film or best supporting actor categories; Tom Hardy ('Shinzon') was nominated in the latter, which went to THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE TWO TOWERS' Andy Serkis for the character of 'Gollum'. Both NEMESIS costume designer Bob Ringwood and make-up artist Michael Westmore were nom'd for their work but the results in those categories has not been made available. Deborah Everton won in 1997 for her costume work in STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT, a film that also took home best supporting actor and supporting actress awards for Brent Spiner ('Data') and Alice Krige ('Borg Queen').

Last August's STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN - The Director's Edition was up for best classic feature DVD release but succumbed to the adorable E.T. Michael Piller's THE DEAD ZONE was nominated in the best syndicated/cable series category but the winner there was FARSCAPE.

You can get the rundown of additional winners here.

No surprises here.

Star Trek's recent incarnations have been lackluster, especially when compared to what else is being produced in the genre.

To me, it looks like the Saturns went to all the right people.

Saturn Awards

I guess the Saturn Awards have merit after all. When
Alias, David Boreanz, Alyson Hannigan, Victor Garber,
and Farscape take home honors for very well-deserved
performances, it restores my faith in the Saturn Awards.

ENTERPRISE is a struggling show so there was no surprise that it didn't take home any awards. I'm surprised it was nominated at all, except for Connor
Trinneer who actually did deserve a nod for his warm,
humorous and energetic performance as Trip.

Star Trek NEMESIS should have received a Saturn, in my opinion-NEMESIS ROCKS!!!

Surprise?

I don't think they even deserved to be nominated. Trek has turned into that aged actor or director that always gets nominated for an Oscar no matter how bad the movie they did was.

Damned conspiracy!

Yet once again, a conspiracy (possibly from the right-wing, but definitely from the media) has stopped NEMESIS from gaining its rightful awards. I'm telling you, it's the media's fault for blasting Nemesis as if it were some kind of mediocre product out to simply reap money. They obviously didn't read Cinescape's exit poll the first weekend of NEMESIS' release, where it was given an A-.

When Bakula can't even get an obvious nod for his underrated acting abilities (I have yet to see anyone who can stare so resolutely into the camera like Bakula can with utter conviction), then I must question the validity of such an award ceremony.
