Patrick Stewart Never Happier Than With STAR TREK Firmly Behind Him

Patrick Stewart ('Jean-Luc Picard') speaks with the Telegraph today about his appearance in the new production of THE MASTER BUILDER, now touring the United Kingdom. The actor says he's relieved to have STAR TREK finally behind him.

"Maybe in the long run it's a blessing," he says. "We can finally have closure on all of that. I don't have any hang-ups about STAR TREK. I am incredibly evolved about it. There were times when I was frustrated and even at times a little bitter, but all that has passed."

The Royal Shakespeare Company veteran says he's never been happier than in the weeks leading up to the play.

"I don't think I have been as happy in any aspect of my life as I have been these past six weeks," he says. "I am so utterly fulfilled at the moment. I'm going to be on tour in England in the spring! Even the rehearsal room is the best rehearsal room I've ever been in in my life."

Stewart characterizes his one-man performances of A CHRISTMAS CAROL while working on STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION as excerises to "fool myself into thinking that I wasn't really doing a television series in Hollywood."

Now returning to the stage for the twlight of his career, he says he's eager to reacquaint himself with the company that gave him his start.

"It was shocking to me that a company which was my life, entirely, should have moved on so dramatically," he says, noting that he is no longer familiar with many of the directors in the RSC today. "So yes I want to talk to the new director at the RSC. Basically what I'm saying is, 'Look, please believe me when I say I'm available.'"

Biting the hand that fed him?

Ive always enjoyed Stewart portrayal of Picard and his other roles including Jeffrey and the X-men films but for him to say that he is glad Trek is behind him, a franchise that made him a house hold word, is a bit of a surprise.

He was doing bit parts (Lifeforce anyone?) before TNG came along so why say such a bitter statement.
I would have loved to see him in one good final Trek film and maybe we will see the WHOLE movie at some point. I really think he would have had a richer character and a more fitting send off if they hadnt cut up to 45 minutes out.

... directed X and X2 and is a Trek fan. He's a fabulous director. I bet he could create a TNG film worthy of Stewart and Co and would be able to convince Stewart to return. Are you listening Paramount? Give Trek another great film, don't stop with NEMESIS. Oh, and it would also help if you limited B&B's involvement with the picture ... they don't seem to know what makes Trek, well, Trek.

Who can blame him?

The last two Next Gen movies had him a caricature of the man he was in the series.

I don't know about you, but the Jean Luc Picard I remember from TNG did not take every opportunity to throw out one-liners in the heat of life or death moments.

That's, sadly how the character will be remembered. Two crap Trek movies in a row. Even the original cast didn't equal that statistic.

I guess this means that Elite Force II will be his last voiceover?

Well, he should be...

...because he's doing great as Professor X, and X2: X-MEN UNITED is about 1000 times better than NEMESIS. Compare the "goodbye" scene from NEMESIS from the one in X2 and you'll understand.X-MEN and TREK are apples and oranges, you say? Not quite. Stewart is the leader is both, and they both have ensemble casts, but X2 was able to balance out ALL the characters in a believable and satisfying way. Now look at the poor actors/characters of NEMESIS. If X-MEN can do it, there's no reason why the producers of NEMESIS couldn't. Plus, X2 had a great villain (Stryker) while NEMESIS had Dr. Evil II. X2 shows what you can do with an ensemble, action-filled sci-fi fantasy. The powers-that-be of TREK don't have a clue.

This intrigues me.
First, he almost said no, to coming back for TNG season 4. Then he almost declined doing X-Men, then he almost declined doing Nemesis.

His love is apparantly in doing stage dramas, but I guess when you offer him the right amount of money, he will do anything--even if he hates it. This man portrayed the most popular and influential leader and moral Teacher in the history of TV and I'm confused about whether he didn't like the role, or working for Paramount.
