STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE NINE's Season Three DVD Gift Set hits U.S. store shelves today and the first reviews have appeared online. Reviewers have been pleased overall with the presentation of the product.

TrekWeb's Steve Krutzler has given the set 4/5 stars in his review, emphasizing the increased growth in the series and the emphasis on serialization and character growth.

"The characters all have divided loyalties on DS9 and season three began to flesh them out for the better. Rather than homogenize the cast into a cooperative, happy family, the DS9 crew encounters more obstacles to its own existence with every installment," Krutzler reports of the set, which appears in stores June 3. "The quality of the 26 episodes are the best yet for DS9 and there's no denying the hours of enjoyment fans of the show or those just discovering it will get from this new third season treatment."

However, there is no mention in the set of the most important addition to the third season: the Defiant. "The arrival of the ship was very important for the show," Krutzler reports, "and yet there is no featurette going through its visual design... or its interior set design." That featurette was included as an extra disc in the sets released at Best Buy.

Furthermore, executive producer Rick Berman does not make an appearance in the set, "perhaps owing to the fact that (Ira Steven) Behr was beginning to diverge into the serialized territory the exec was forced to swallow," Krutzler adds.

Jeremy Conrad at IGN.com was equally impressed with the set, giving it a similar rating of 8/10.

"This year features major revelations and developments for certain characters," Conrad reports, "and (it) ends with another cliffhanger of sorts that really lets people know that the series is going down a darker path than its predecessors."

Conrad also comments on the season's DVD presentation. "Great colors, excellent detail with not many problems at all... The 5.1 mix gets a chance to shine... Lots of great interview footage. Also includes one of the best featurettes on the DS9 sets so far."

I'd rather be able to buy them individually and get only the episodes I really liked. 700 dollars is way too much. If each set is 100 bucks then indidividually the shows should be around 4.50 DVD in g eneral is usually a ripoff, way overpriced and capitalizes on peoples 'must have' syndrome. I wish there were more of the 13.99 vhs episodes available.
