LeVar Burton Says NEMESIS Lacked Character, Talks ENT and Franchise Health

PROMENADE

Typhon Station is a very fastpaced PBeM RPG with skilled, experienced players and a warm sense of bonding and community. We play at the turn-of-the-century, 2400, and are located in the Typhon Expanses, bordering the Neutral Zone, proximate to the Romulan Empire, and near the Iconian Digs, and are on the first warning route of the original Borg Incursion.
We have three stations to post from, SB 185, USS Odyssey, and USS Wraith. They all have general and particular storylines and all interact. This game is not for the faint of heart! The writing is superb and comes hot and heavy. We have some open spots and also we will consider character suggestions. So, longtime RPGers and novices, check us out. See if you want to make Typhon Station your home away from home.

Actor/director LeVar Burton ('Geordi') speaks in the latest issue of STAR TREK Monthly, now available in the United Kingdom, about the state of the franchise, saying too much of a good thing may be hurting success.

"I'm a big fan of character developmentm," he says in excerpts available at Sci-Fi Pulse. "I think that one of the strong suits of the STAR TREK franchise has always been the interplay between the characters, and I feel that a lot of that was sacrificed in favour of action [In NEMESIS]."

As a director, Burton has helmed four ENTERPRISE episodes, beginning with season one's "Terra Nove." Other installments include "Fortunate Son" and this past season's "Cogenitor" and "First Flight." With this experience under his belt, the actor/director says he worries about whether ENTERPRISE is able to keep stories fresh.

"It seems like right now the primary concern is whether the producers are pushing the boundaries enough," he says. "Given the fact that the ratings are down over 40% on last season on Enterprise alone, I think the reality is self evident. I definitely don't think that the franchise has run its course at all. I just think that there's been an over - saturation of it."

Burton's movie BLIZZARD will roll into theaters in November, a Holiday picture about a reindeer voiced by TREK co-star Whoopi Goldberg. He says the movie, which also co-stars Kevin Pollack and STAR TREK VI: THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY actor Christopher Plummer ('Chang'), showcases his directorial ability: "I'm pretty proud of it."

Thanks for your concern but we all know about this sorry state of Trek for a while. As long as B&B(whom you work for) are incharge, things can only get worse.

Burton is right

There were many reasons why I did not like Star Trek X, among them was the lack of character development. Riker is just now leaving Enterprise? It's still the same old gang after fifteen years? At least when you watch Treks II thru VI there has been some movement in careers. Chekov is a first officer on the Reliant, Spock is a captain in his own right. Sulu is promoted to Captain himself.

What do with get with Nemesis? Worf is back for some reason that is never explained on screen, Riker is just now becoming a captain. Wesley is in uniform even though the last time we saw him he had quit Starfleet, etc. I mean, Janeway has been promoted to god-damned admiral and Riker isn't even a captain yet?! You cannot tell me he is still so unsure of himself that after all this time he hasn't secured his own command.

While we're at it, Geordi should be on the fast track for his own command as well.

On top of that the movie did blatantly rip off both Star Trek II and VI, and the Romulans weren't written very consistently or intelligently, etc. Just a messy movie all around.

Lacking Character

He's right. As much as I liked "Nemesis," it was still missing something. And when Data was killed, it didn't affect me. When Spock died, I was a wreck. When Data died, I was momentarily befuddled. That's it. If there had been more development, it would have had more impact.

UPN and movies are the problem

LeVar Burton hit the nail right on the head with the lack of character development in Nemesis. During the series, character development was everything we'd come to expect from TNG and a big part of what made the series popular. But I'd also say that TOS movies were no different when you consider that Uhura, Scotty, Sulu, and Chekov had little or no character development in the movies. TOS was, in my opinion, geared more toward action anyway because that's what it took to get a show on the air at that time. TNG could afford to be more character driven and cerebral because it was in syndication and had no one network to answer to.

With Enterprise, Star Trek once again needs to cater to a network to stay on the air. The network demands action and the producers must deliver with no questions asked. So Enterprise is in the same boat as TOS because of network politics. I'm not saying that Berman and Braga are completely off the hook, but I will say that Star Trek will never have another good series if it can't put the series on in syndication.

Which side are you on, Levar? If Enterprise is taking it too far why do u keep running back to direct for it?
