Actor/director
LeVar Burton ('Geordi') speaks in the latest issue of STAR TREK Monthly, now available in the United Kingdom, about the state of the franchise, saying too much of a good thing may be hurting success.
"I'm a big fan of character developmentm," he says in excerpts available at Sci-Fi Pulse. "I think that one of the strong suits of the STAR TREK franchise has always been the interplay between the characters, and I feel that a lot of that was sacrificed in favour of action [In NEMESIS]."
As a director, Burton has helmed four ENTERPRISE episodes, beginning with season one's "Terra Nove." Other installments include "Fortunate Son" and this past season's "Cogenitor" and "First Flight." With this experience under his belt, the actor/director says he worries about whether ENTERPRISE is able to keep stories fresh.
"It seems like right now the primary concern is whether the producers are pushing the boundaries enough," he says. "Given the fact that the ratings are down over 40% on last season on Enterprise alone, I think the reality is self evident. I definitely don't think that the franchise has run its course at all. I just think that there's been an over - saturation of it."
Burton's movie BLIZZARD will roll into theaters in November, a Holiday picture about a reindeer voiced by TREK co-star Whoopi Goldberg. He says the movie, which also co-stars Kevin Pollack and STAR TREK VI: THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY actor Christopher Plummer ('Chang'), showcases his directorial ability: "I'm pretty proud of it."
