George Takei and Penny Johnson Jerald in 9/11 Docudrama Already Taking Heat

PROMENADE

Typhon Station is a very fastpaced PBeM RPG with skilled, experienced players and a warm sense of bonding and community. We play at the turn-of-the-century, 2400, and are located in the Typhon Expanses, bordering the Neutral Zone, proximate to the Romulan Empire, and near the Iconian Digs, and are on the first warning route of the original Borg Incursion.
We have three stations to post from, SB 185, USS Odyssey, and USS Wraith. They all have general and particular storylines and all interact. This game is not for the faint of heart! The writing is superb and comes hot and heavy. We have some open spots and also we will consider character suggestions. So, longtime RPGers and novices, check us out. See if you want to make Typhon Station your home away from home.

STAR TREK actors George Takei ('Sulu') and Penny Johnson Jerald ('Kassidy Yates') co-star in Showtime's retelling of the events surrounding the terrorist attacks of September 11th, 2001, DC 9/11, set to air this fall. Takei plays U.S. transportation secretary Norman Maneta, who shut down air traffic after the attacks, while Jerald tackles national security advisor Condoleeza Rice. Actor/comedian Timothy Bottoms plays the president.

The Washington Post takes a look at the film today, which is already drawing criticism for writer/producer Lionel Chetwynd's version of events. Based in part on Bob Woodward's best-selling book chronicling the events (BUSH AT WAR), Chetwynd says his Hollywood version is as accurate as possible.

"I don't think it's possible to do a revision of this particular bit of history. Every scholar who has looked at this has come to the same place that this film does," he told the Post.

Not everyone agrees, with some commentators citing Chetwynd's conservative affiliation with the White House as fuel for George W. Bush's reelection campaign. Toronto Sun columnist Linda McQuaig says the movie "is sure to help the White House further its two-pronged reelection strategy: Keep Americans terrified of terrorism and make Bush look like the guy best able to defend them."

Others criticize snipets of dialogue such as "If some tinhorn terrorist wants me, tell him to come and get me! I'll be at home, waiting for the bastard!", saying Chetwynd over-embellished the truth. Says Texas radio commentator Jim Hightower:

"Instead of the doe-eyed, uncertain, worried figure that he was that day, Bush-on-film is transformed into an infallible, John Wayne-ish, Patton-type leader..."

Chetwynd was appointed by Bush to the President's Committee on Arts and the Humanities in 2001 and had access to officials when penning the drama, which the Post claims was run by conservative "pundits" as well. Chetwynd maintains that DC 9/11 does not take inappropriate liberty with history, however.

"I would hope what's presented is a fully colored and nuanced picture of a human being in a difficult situation."

You can read much more about the docudrama here. DC 9/11 is set to air on Showtime around the second anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

Shame on George. . .

. . . a real gentleman I had the pleasure of having breakfast with in Palm Beach, Fla., many years ago (and who, unless his political views have radically changed lately, can hardly be well-disposed towards the Bush administration) for lending his stature to such an apparently sorry-ass piece of propaganda. Up till now, I would have said that his all-time worst career move was bowing out of "The Trouble With Tribbles" to "star" in John Wayne's pretty laughable THE GREEN BERETS, but he may have finally managed to top that one.

George, did you really need the work that bad??

Did the producer and I even read the same book?

I'd be cautious about sounding the propaganda

They cast Timothy Bottoms as the President. He's most famous for playing Bush in Comedy Central's early-2001 series "That's My Bush," from the creators of South Park. I've even seen better impressionists, both in terms of mannerism and physical appearance. For my money the guy they have on The Tonight Show is pretty good.

But regardless of who else I think they could pick, I don't think if the Bush campaign/administration had any control -- or even influence -- over the content they would have let a guy who's only known for making fun of the President play the President in a sober movie depicting the events that basically redefined his entire administration and how he was perceived by the public. What next, a DNC-funded biopic of Bill Clinton starring Darrel Hammond? Or casting Darrell Hammond as Dick Cheney in this film, for that matter?
