Executive producer Rick Berman speaks in the newest issue of the UK's STAR TREK Monthly (#107), and he says ENTERPRISE's chances against rival WB's SMALLVILLE may be better than some think.

"You know, I don't know. I look at the alternatives of having switched to Tuesday night or having gone up against the new JAG show, and I just don't know," he says in excerpts available at Sci-Fi Pulse. "There are those people who think we're going to share certain demographics with SMALLVILLE, and there are people who feel that the demographics for ENTERPRISE and SMALLVILLE are different enough that it won't have much of an impact."

Berman also reveals that the recurring military characters may have variable numbers, with some roles sticking while others may fall by the wayside.

"They are going to be recurring characters," he says emphatically. "We're going to be bringing them along as needed and the ones that work and the ones we like, we'll be keeping, and the ones we don't, we won't. The number of these commandos - and I call them commandos because we're not exactly sure yet what we're going to be calling them - is going to be somewhat indeterminate. So, the casting can be quite fluid for us."

The exec also says that the Xindi's appearance has been decided and that it will be an interesting element of the new season

"We know very much what they will look like, but what they look like will be a very interesting plot point."

It looks like B&B are ready to throw in the towel. Berman sounds like defeated, washed-up and seeing the ice-berg in front of him that is going to sink his Enterprise. Good for him and us.

Funny replies you guys have. I knew they'd be coming. The statement from Rick Berman "you know, I don't know" sounds like he deliberately made a joke.

But I'm totally with him, on his side.

What else is there to say? He just doesn't have a clue.

I'll be watching Smallville, Enterprise can enjoy its final season without me.

Ive been a Trek fan for as long as i remember and at every opertunity i would watch it but now i will be watching Smallville, its a better show.
Kill off Enterprise now and leave the Trek world in limbo for a few years then bring it back without B&B.

I wish he'd use that logic for the main cast as well. Montgomery, Reed and Hoshi suck, and are worthless as characters. Get rid of THEM and replace them with actors who are worth a shit. Replace them with characters the writers want to tell stories about.

If Berman is not the total moronic buffon that he makes himself out to be then he is a secretly a genius. You see by competing with Smallville ENT will quickly be buried in the ratings and Season 3 will be canceled quietly.

But why?

Becuase the whole series has been a big F up from the start and he's bored all ready. Its time to dump this show in a "heroic series finally" that saves Earth and kills the whole crew off. Allowing Berman to go back to the TNG era.

Going against Smallville isn't a great idea. If Enterprise wants to succede, it needs to also pander to a slightly younger audience. But since the majority of that grouping is watching smallville....
But then where are they going to move it. Tuesday? What about JAG and the new Navy show. Not a chance. Thursday is out of the question because of wrestling. Friday would spell certain doom. Monday might work....but really, they can't move the show. They only thing they can hope for is to improve the show.
Heck, I watch smallville, and I'm not sure which one I'm gonna watch on Wednesday and which one will have to wait for Sunday or reruns.

Rick Berman = Joe Stalin?

Didn't someone once compare Rick Berman to Joe Stalin?

I don't need a vindication of the quality of Nemesis. I think Nemesis was a terrific movie. Whatever the reasons the film did not do as well at the box office as it should have are probably the reasons that the ratings for Enterprise have slipped. It has to do with the way the franchise is perceived. It has to do with the age of the franchise. It has to do with a lot of things, but I don't think it has to do with the specific quality of the one movie or the one series.

Of course, the failure of NEMESIS and the poor ratings for ENTERPRISE have absolutely nothing to do with Rick Berman's piss-poor guidance of the franchise. As far as he's concerned, he's god and we don't know what makes good Star Trek.

Give me a break!

The day he cleans out his office will be the day that Star Trek has a real opportunity to become great and interesting again. Mediocrity is not the Star Trek franchise's best suit.
