The Official STAR TREK web site has posted a new production report on the season three premiere of ENTERPRISE, titled "The Xindi." The report, which is the first since season two wrapped in April, goes into extensive detail on the ways in which the season opener begins a new path for the rejuvenated ENTERPRISE as well as listing new characters and guest stars.

"This segment begins a multi-episode arc that follows the NX-01's journey into the Delphic Expanse…” seemingly taking a leaf out of the DS9 book, which often dealt with arc stories such as the Dominion War. “With a nine-day shooting schedule under the direction of Allan Kroeker, "Xindi" gave the various production departments some of their biggest challenges since the series pilot "Broken Bow."

As the title suggests, the episode centres on the mysterious Xindi, creating a great deal of work not only for Michael Westmore’s make-up team, but also the special FX department. “We learn in this episode that there are actually several sentient species of Xindi, all collaborating in the campaign against humanity, including "Xindi-Reptilians," "Xindi-Sloths" and the simpler "Xindi-Humanoids." We'll also be seeing "Xindi-Insectoids" and "Xindi-Aquatics," but they'll be computer generated by Dan Curry's and Ronald B. Moore's visual effects team.”

There was plenty of work to spread round all areas of the production team, including Herman Zimmerman with the production design. “The script calls for [a Xindi] complex to be filled with a murky blue haze, and blue residue caking the walls (the mined substance is called "trellium"). So the production crew not only dressed the mine sets with painted rocks and quartz crystals, but also brought in bags and bags of blue-dyed Styrofoam. A blue-tinted smoke filled the sets during the shooting, and the actors involved in those scenes including Scott Bakula were lucky enough to be smeared with blue dust.”

Finally, details of the new marine style characters becomes clearer, as details of character and actor names as well as the team’s title are revealed for the first time. “A significant new element in the show this season is the presence of a military contingent, as mentioned in "The Expanse." These soldiers are referred to as MACOs, standing for "Military Assault Command Operations." The team is led by a notable actor for STAR TREK fans; Steven Culp plays 'Major Hayes' known to many fans by now as Commander Riker’s replacement as First Officer, Commander Martin Madden in Star Trek Nemesis.

There are a contingent of other guest and recurring roles, filled by many Trek alumni:

  • Nathan Anderson ('Namon' in VOYAGER’S “Nemesis”) plays 'Sergeant Kempe'
  • Daniel Dae Kim ('Gotana-Retz' VOYAGER’S "Blink of an Eye") plays 'Corporal Chang'.
  • Richard Lineback
  • Stephen McHattie
  • Randy Oglesby
  • Scott MacDonald, Rick Worthy and Tucker Smallwood.

You can read more about the production details here.

Season 3 is the turning point, place your bets!

Well, they've made an attempt at really trying to get this show up to speed. After two years of brain damaged meandering, they've finally decided to make this into a Star Trek show again.

For those who don't like the military aspect, you have to understand that Star Trek was always about the balance between peaceful exploration and not being destroyed by those who would destroy you. I couldn't sit still for seven years of Archer knocking Vulcans out with a single punch, something which shouldn't be able to happen under any circumstances.

The Xindi concept seems like it may be borrowed in part from the X-Files, and that's okay. (The "X" in Xindi leads me to believe that.) Just as long as they're not taking the "Kitchen sink" approach that Hippo describes below. There absolutely needs to be more of a body count from time to time. So far they've been up against some very dangerous and aggressive adversaries and not one single crewmember has died that I'm aware of.

So many stupid mistakes were made in the first two years of ENTERPRISE, I really have to wonder how Rick Berman can retain any credibility in Hollywood. He doesn't take any responsibility for the failure of NEM, VOY, or the struggle of ENT to boldly go where they're going. ENT'S foray into the franchise has meekly gone where other series have already gone before.

Of course, if people are willing to eat crap and like it, they'll just keep dishing it out. And in the case of this franchise, Mr. Berman is "Chef".

They're writing good stories and usually it's perceived well, when they have something new to write about.

Writing for the Xindi will provide new opportunities to tell a story within the "Star Trek" universe. I can't imagine it'll be like "Starship Troopers" (not that I've ever seen that movie) because this is still the spirit and tone from TNG. Simply because the producers are still those who worked with TNG.

The danger is, they will spend so much time on the visual part of the story, that there won't be enough time to think behind the pictures and tell an imaginative story.

I truly hope that these various Xindi have all been properly developed on paper in terms of how they act, not just how cool they look. It's all very well to give Michael Westmore and the FX teams a lot more money and Emmy-bait, but unless there is something really distinct about the various sub-species of Xindi beyond Braga's 'cool' factor, then that's a lot of money being wasted and yet another thing DS9 (with its Dominion trifecta) did better. Fingers crossed.

are just a way to get the 'redshirts' onto the show. One issue with Archer et al is that they are out there in space and so far have lost what, two, three crew members? This is just a way to up the stakes and off some humans every few episodes. It's not a give over to a military SG-1 kind of thing.

If this is so bad, stop watching and stop complaining. I find it very interesting that many seem to know that an episode or season will suck without ever reading the scripts or actually seeing the episodes. Find something more productive to do with your time.

Dear producers! Please don't make a militaristic warmongering propaganda show out of Enterprise!

Star Trek was an important part of my life in the last 15 years ... when you do so, it would be dead for me.

Don't you guys remember that "marines soldiers" thinghy was one of the premises that was beeing tested for series five before they decided to do the Pre-Federation series. So This is really nothing new. They just pick up old stuff already tested.

Too many people

I guess the opening will have to change will all these cast members being brought in, maybe there will be a killer guitar solo while they flash all these names across the screen.

How many lines can you squeeze out of a cast of a dozen people in an hour? Not many I'm sure.

They need some real shake-ups like some cast members quiting from embarassment. Half the cast should be killed of (Hoshi, Mayweather) and put in some new interesting people. And T'pol can go to, hot babes that can't act are a dime a dozen, just give us a new one each season.

I am so frustrated with how the franchise had been put under by the fools in charge, they have no idea what they are doing anymore. Going back and looking at old trek movies is stupid. Those movies looked at real stories they took from shakespear. When you rip off your own franchise for inspiration its no wonder the show is such a bore.

Rosaline Chan (Chinese) plays Keiko (Japanese)
Garret Wang (Chinese) plays Harry Kim (Korean)
Linda Park (Korean) plays Hoshi Sato (Japanese)
Kim (Korean) plays Chang (Chinese, probably)

You can make the author play the culture he/she's familiar with, you know. :-) Not like we learned much about Harry Kim as a Korean anyways. Although, Keiko was pretty unique and strong.

Wow. After reading this I am really psyched about season 3. If they can just continue on the strong streak they ended season 2 on, this series could possibly be some of the best trek ever. There variety in the Xindi species is incredible. This is exactly the kind of stuff that trek needs to survive. Just as long as they don't screw it up

the Xindi-Household Pets and the Xindi-Fish (with a special guest appearance from Bill Murray knocking on T'Pol's door and announcing "candygram.")

This reeks of the same "everything but the kitchen sink" mentality that came to plague VOY.

The only worthwhile news in that "update" is the casting of Daniel Dae Kim, who is a fascinating actor. Of course, it won't make any difference unless the material is there to work with.

And whatever happened to these "new writers" B & B was supposedly "interviewing"? Have they announced ANY changes to the writing staff? What's the matter? Couldn't find anyone talentless enough to bring on staff? I'm sure there are plenty of porn script writers in Hollywood to choose from.

he's a fine actor and it's good to see a bit more militaristic approach, given the time period Enterprise is set in (You'd figure each ship would have a small detachment of Marines, and I'd kill for some "SPs" at starbases and at Earth). But again, the skills of the production staff have never been in doubt. If the writing sucks, then the show will as well. B & B, you've got two strikes on you. Screw this season up, and you're out.
