Actor John Billingsley ('Doctor Phlox') talks in the new issue of STARBURST magazine about life as a peripheral regular character on STAR TREK's ENTERPISE.

"I'm not a door pounder," he says in excerpts available at Sci-Fi Pulse. "I don't find that it's very valuable to take a posture that can be read as antagonistic. But I certainly would like more to do... The producers come by. They seem to like me. They seem to like my work. I'm not a mind reader. So I can't tell whether or not there are thoughts of developing me further or if they have their hands full developing the other characters, who are probably always going to have more to do."

Despite having less work to do on the show as some of the other actors, Billingsley says the opportunity to work on STAR TREK makes future artistic fulfillment a lot easier.

"After Seven years I will be able to do whatever the hell I want," the actor says of the newfound security of a franchise gig. "I could go back to the theatre and just work on stage without having to worry about generating income. I can write. I can travel. I'm aware, in that sense that Enterprise is like winning the sweepstakes as an actor. If over the years the work is not a personally fulfilling as I might like it to be, I will probably find a way to augment it by doing theatre during our hiatuses.

Typcasting is always a concern for TREK actors, but the Denobulan performer says worrying about it doesn't occupy much of his time.

"My only other concern would be that after seven years it might be hard to get a lot of work in the industry because, like it or not, people might ghettoize me as either a TV actor or a STAR TREK actor. I can't anticipate any of that. I'll have to see what happens to me between now and the end of the show, and then after I'm done with the show. I don't spend much time worrying about it, though. I've never been one to worry about that kind of stuff. It's out of my hands. The worst thing that can happen is that I go back and do plays!"

You can read more from Billingsley in the excerpts at this page.

Phlox had a chance at a huge dramatic moment...

but it was lost. I think Plhox is really underused by the writers. In "The Breach" when the audience learns of the Antarans' hatred of Phlox and his people, I was really disappointed to see that the Doctor was given the "safe way" out at the end of the episode by writing to his son to say that he has grown beyond his upbringing and can treat, live, work with, yadda-yadda the Antarans.

I thought a nice little "twist" would have been to have Phlox write that same son, stating what he had to do, what he said to the Antaran to save him, how the Captain was glad that he did, but that he can't stand the Antarans and that he wished that they would all just die. Revealing that he has something in common with his "bad" son.

Too bitter? Too mean-spirited? I say, no. Worf let the Romulan die. Worf still hates Romulans. Phlox would have saved that Antaran because he was ordered to by Archer. It would have revealed a side of the Doctor that hasn't been seen, let alone in any version of Trek: a Doctor who wished harm on another.

I don't know what do you think?

I like this guy and his character. He's a classy guy that always behaves professionally. I like his attitutde about his Star Trek gig. I'd like to see his character developed more because I think the character and actor are interesting. Billingsley will never want for work. He's too good and has carved out a nice niche for himself as a character actor.
