Season 2 TrekWeb Poll Results

Written by Sid K., edited by Steve Krutzler

With the revamped third season of the STAR TREK prequel bearing down, the only for certain is the diverse range of opinions that will surely emerge once the first episode airs. To some, the series may return with the glory they've imagined; for others, no change will be enough and the broadcast will do little to change already-fermented opinions.

TrekWeb will take the pulse of online fandom each week with our continuing episode polls, and while the process is a bit short of scientifically foolproof, we thought we'd take a look back at last season to see just how each episode fared. As you might expect, TrekWeb's favorite episodes tended also to be the most-watched, except for "A Night In Sickbay," whiched drew the season's largest audience but finds itself near the bottom of almost all the measures.

A week after the initial airing of "The Expanse," the relative poll rankings for season two of ENTERPRISE were tabulated with "Dead Stop" and "Future Tense" leading the pack. Based on poll numbers, pulled at one or more points for the week following each episode’s airing (more specifics below), the episodes for season two have been ranked for four different measures: average, median, percent ‘10’ votes, and percent ‘1-5’ votes. For most of the season, the episodes bunched themselves into the elite, the average, and the sub par, however, some episodes near the end of the season filled in the gaps between the average and the elite making it hard (but not impossible) to draw a dividing line.

Rankings are based on vote counts obtained on the Friday and/or Monday after each episode aired (Tuesday in rare cases) as well as the final poll results. The statistics did vary based on the timing of the voter snapshot. Every attempt was made to establish the rankings such that they reflect consistency within their time frames (e.g. closely ranked episodes which all had Monday counts would be based on the Monday counts). Final poll results did not exist for "Singularity" and "Precious Cargo"; final mission voting was disregarded for "A Night in Sickbay," "Dawn," "Vanishing Point," "Canamar," and "The Catwalk" since their voting extended beyond a week’s time and would be inconsistent with the others (votes for The Expanse were pulled on Wednesday May 28 to get consistent numbers with the majority). In a few cases, when no consistent time frame existed for relative comparison, the rankings were a judgment based on the numbers at hand.

Average is the sum of the numeric designations of the poll ratings (1-10) voted divided by the number of votes. Median is the rating point where the number of votes above and below are equal. Ranking by Percent of ‘10’ votes is the number of rating 10 votes cast divided by the total number of votes cast (e.g. 43% of the votes for "Future Tense" were 10’s; 14% of "Horizon"’s votes were 10). Ranking by Percent of 1-5 Votes is the number of votes cast for the lower 5 ratings divided by the total number of votes.

Did you mean "cemented", but tried to write "fomented", and had it come out "fermented"?

    Perhaps not... ;)

Berman & Braga: Your episode titles suck!

Where is the imagination that went into titles like "City on the Edge of Forever," "Spectre of the Gun," "Who Mourns for Adonis?" and so on? What a BORING list of episode titles. Can we please ditch the one-word-title plan? Or try a little more imagination than "The insert-word-here?" Or equally bland two-word titles like "Future Tense?" What's the best title of the bunch? "A Night in Sickbay." It makes me want to see that episode. But guess what? Everyone says it STINKS! Further proof that B&B have no clue how to write.

Season 2 not so bad on second viewing

I've been trying to rewatch some of season 2 over the summer and although there are some boring episodes I didn't even both with, I've found more and more ones that I'm really enjoying on second viewing. Perhaps my expectations are different, but in the past few weeks between Congenitor, Regeneration, First Flight and Cease Fire not to mention Dead Stop and Future Tesnse, I'm beginning to think that season 2 overall wasn't a bad second season of Trek at all. It may not have been DS9 quality, but I think it was way, way better than season 2 of Voyager. Hell I didn't even watch season 2 of Voyager consistently because I was so bored with it.

The fool, or the fool who follows him?

That said: "full-proof"?! Tsk. Can't carp on poor writing on ENT when gaffes like that show up.

    Steve, regarding the polls ...

Steve, I know this is a serious pet peeve of yours, but I have to say that the voting poll done every week for ENT is kinda silly.

Firstly, why are there so many categories? Why do you have so many choices? There should only be five:

    Fantastic
    Above average
    Average
    Below average
    Terrible

Or something like that. I believe you have 7 choices now (?) It seems like too many. Some of the choices seem very, very similar.

Also, why not have viewers compare the ENT episodes against OTHER ENT episodes? Why compare against all Trek eps that have come before? I find it hard to swallow the votes because of this. For instance, a crappy ep like A NIGHT IN SICKBAY gets a bunch of glowing votes, but I find it hard to believe that anyone truly thinks A NIGHT IN SICKBAY is even as good as SPOCK'S BRAIN. Why not specify that people should compare each ENT ep with previous ENT eps?

Some thoughts to consider, maybe. Hope I didn't offend with this post.

    Timmer33
