Berman Talks New Writer Coto, Plus Says Excised Scenes Could Make Way Onto DVD

Producer Rick Berman speaks in the newest issue of STAR TREK Monthly, now available in the United Kingdom, updating fans on the ENTERPRISE writing staff's latest addition: former ODYSSEY 5 writer/producer Manny Coto.

"He's a major prospect for us," Berman says in excerpts available at Sci-Fi Pulse. "Along with Chris Black, Brannon [Braga] and myself, he'll be one of our co-executive producers. He's done a lot of writing and producing and also some directing. His last show was actually ODYSSEY 5, which I thought was a very, very interesting show."

Berman responds to a fan question about a subplot involving Archer's romance with a woman on Earth that was cut from "The Expanse."

"Would I ever imagine scenes like that being put onto DVDs? Yeah," he says. "Basically everybody is doing that now on DVDs of feature films and television shows. If a scene was cut because it wasn't done well, or because of the way in which it was directed or performed, then I would say that's something that I would not be too prone to put onto a DVD. But I think that when a scene was a good one but was just cut for time, as was the scene you're talking about, then sure, I'd consider that for inclusion on a DVD."

None of the ST:TNG or ST:DS9 DVD sets, which will be entirely available by year's end, include deleted scenes. Berman also talks about Wednesday's episode "Exile" and the prospects for future TREK feature films here.

I am a die hard fan of Mr. Coto's work so i'm really really happy to head about this.

All I hope is that they really let him do his job and develop his ideas to the fullest. He's ususally a bit "out there" but right now that's what this shows needs.

This entire interview hints at "re-releasing" TNG, DS9 with extra footage and calling it "The Directors Edition". After hearing this I would hold off buying any of the Trek box sets.

This "time constraint" stuff they keep talking about...would it kill them to make an episode that was longer than 39 minutes without commercials? I mean, if one episode ran 43 minutes....would UPN fall to pieces? No, of course it wouldn't...its just stupid that he shold even have to talk about this...if the scene was good, it shouldn't have been cut. Period.

The addition of Coto to the ENT team is good news. Hopefully he can convince the writing team that it's time to make a change. I mean, Season 3 has been better than the past 2, but in order to fuel the fire, we will need people like Coto watching their backs.

Good decision folks.
